Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Knights Fall Short Against RIT, 87-80

Rochester, NY – Senior Chris Hulbert recorded his sixth 20-point game of the season, but his effort wasn't enough as the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team fell to RIT 87-80 in Liberty League action Friday evening.

The Golden Knights saw their overall mark fall to 5-14 while they moved to 2-10 in the Liberty League. RIT edged forward to 7-10 and 5-6. Clarkson will look to get back on track when it faces Hobart College on Saturday, a team that the Knights will also face at home on Wednesday.

Clarkson got off to a hot start as Joe Lucas hit three 3-pointers and Blake Gearhart had three makes in the first six minutes of the contest, putting the Knights up 18-5. RIT combated the strong opening from the Golden Knights by responding with its own 18-3 run, taking a 23-21 lead the 9:47 mark on a Michael Young layup. That would end the overwhelming streaks for either team, as the two teams stayed close. The Tigers had a pair of six-point leads, only to see Clarkson keep things tight with 3-pointers from Lucas and Gearhart. A Brock Bowen 3-pointer with 32 seconds left in the half allowed the Tigers head into the locker room with a three-point edge, 39-36.

The majority of the first half scoring for Clarkson came from three players, as Joe Lucas (12), Blake Gearhart (11), and Chris Hulbert (10) combined for 33 of Clarkson's 36 points in the opening 20 minutes.

The beginning of the second half was much like the last 10 minutes of the first, as the teams stayed close. Clarkson led by as many as three early in the second, while the Tigers enjoyed a four-point lead near the midway point of the period. Hulbert hit a 3-pointer at the 10:51 mark to put Clarkson up by one, only to see RIT responded with seven straight points, including back-to-back 3-pointers from Matt Caggiano.

Down by eight after a pair of free throws with just over a minute remaining, Ryan Miles-Ferguson hit quick a layup and then dropped in a 3-pointer from the top of the key to pull Clarkson within three with 40 seconds remaining. After the Tigers produced just one point on the front end of a 1-and-1, Gearhart raced down the court for two more and made the score 82-80 with 27 seconds to play. That would be as close as Clarkson would get, however, as RIT hit enough free throws down the stretch to hold off the Knights' charge.

Hulbert led all scorers with 24 points, shooting 9-for-20 overall with six 3-point field goals, to go along with eight rebounds. Joe Lucas finished with 16, shooting 5-for-10 from beyond the 3-point arc, while Blake Gearhart (13) and Ryan Miles-Ferguson (11) also finished in double figures. RIT saw five players finish in double figures, led by Matt Caggiano's 18 points coming off the bench.
