Delaney Scores Collegiate-Best 18 Points in Clarkson's Loss at Plattsburgh

Plattsburgh, NY – Seventeen ties and 21 lead changes highlighted the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team's season-opener, but the Golden Knights came up on the short end of a back-and-forth affair against Plattsburgh State, coming up short 76-71 on Tuesday night.

The Golden Knights will host the home portion of their schedule next Tuesday when they host Oswego State.

Clarkson fell behind early by eight points when Anderson Willard, Jr. hit a 3-pointer a little over six minutes into Tuesday's contest, but Clarkson rallied with nine straight to take the lead on a Finn Cork layup at 10:20. From there, the two teams were never far apart, exchanging the lead with frequency. Garret Delaney hit a 3-pointer with 1:49 5o go to put Clarkson up by three, but Plattsburgh responded with a six-point run and ended the half up by a basket.

The second half saw more teetering back and forth as the team's exchanged jabs in hopes of building significant runs. Justin Blanchett hit a 3-pointer for Plattsburgh at 13:06 to put the Cardinals up by five, but just a minute later a 3-pointer from Delaney had Clarkson back in the lead. Erik Salo's layup and free throw at 6:46 appeared to sway things back in Plattsburgh's direction, but a couple minutes later, Blake Gearhart hit back-to-back jumpers to put Clarkson up by one. The last time the game was even came when Teddy Fravel hit a layup with 2:33 to go, but Plattsburgh scored eight straight in the next few minutes as Clarkson couldn't keep pace. The big shot came on a Kevin Tabb 3-pointer with 1:05 remaining, giving the Cardinals a five-point advantage. Tabb later scored off a rebound on the break to put the game away.

Delaney finished with 18 points to lead Clarkson, as the junior shot 5-for-9 overall with five 3-point field goals. Blake Gearhart scored 15 points and added four rebounds, and Ryan Miles-Ferguson scored 15 as well. Finn Cork was a point and rebound shy of a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.

For Plattsburgh, Tabb finished with 19 points on 7-for-15 shooting and Myles Jones was 6-for-10 from the floor with 16 points. The Cardinals shot 17-for-30 in the second half and went 5-for-9 from beyond the 3-point arc.
