Knights Fall On Late Basket to Vassar, 75-73

Poughkeepsie, NY – After trading baskets for much of the final 10 minutes, it was Vassar College that would convert last, sending the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team to a 75-73 defeat in Liberty League action Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their two-game winning streak come to an end, falling to 2-8 overall and 0-4 in the Liberty League. Vassar remained unbeaten in league games at 4-0, moving to 8-2 overall.

The first half saw its fair share of streaks by each team. The Golden Knights scored the first five points and enjoyed a four-point lead (12-8) after a Dante Joefield layup at the 14:08 mark, but Vassar responded with a run of its own, sparked by back-to-back 3-pointers from Avni Mustafaj and Ethan Ellis. The Brewers went on a 17-3 run overall, which was only briefly halted by a 3-pointer from Jack Dalgety. Down by 10 after free throws from Mustafaj, Clarkson went on a 16-2 run with key makes coming from Joe Lucas. Both teams saw their paces slow in the final minutes of the first half, and the teams went into the locker room knotted up at 33-33.

Vassar scored the first two baskets of the second half, but the Knights scored the next 13 points, including a pair of 3-pointers from Blake Gearhart, to put Clarkson up 46-39. Still up by seven after a Gearhart layup at 13:29, the Knights found themselves on the wrong end of yet another run by the Brewers as Mustafaj scored eight straight by himself to put the Brewers up by a point. Near the midway point of the second half, Luke Adams hit a 3-pointer to give Vassar a four-point advantage, forcing Clarkson to take a timeout.

Finally, the streaks seemed to come to an end for each team as both squads mostly traded baskets for a stretch, with the makes coming on the inside as each team struggled from the perimeter. Clarkson was particularly snake bit from the outside, missing nine straight from beyond the 3-point arc over a stretch of 13 minutes.

The Knights were able to survive their cold stretch by making key baskets in the final minutes. With the Green and Gold trailing by four, Blake Gearhart was able to make a steal at the 3-point line and raced down the court for a fast break layup in traffic to cut the margin to two. A minute later, after another miss from the perimeter, Joe Lucas was able to gain possession on the offensive glass and quickly converted to tie the game 73-73 with 55 seconds remaining. Each team missed on their opportunities to take the lead, but Vassar wouldn't miss on its second opportunity as Zach Johnson converted with a right hand on the inside with four seconds to go. Not giving Vassar time to reset, Dante Joefield raced down the court and got a decent look from midcourt, but his attempt bounced off the backboard and rattled out of the cylinder as time expired.

Blake Gearhart led Clarkson with 19 points while Chris Hulbert and Joe Lucas chipped in 14 points and 13 points, respectively. For Vassar, Johnson had a double-double on 20 points and 10 rebounds with Mustafaj and Ellis also finishing in double figures with 13 points and 11 points, respectively.
