RIT Holds On to Down Clarkson, 77-70

Potsdam, NY – Junior Ryan Miles-Ferguson and sophomore Garret Delaney scored a combined 31 points in reserve duty for the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team, but their efforts were not enough as the Golden Knights dropped a 77-70 decision to RIT in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 4-11 on the season and 1-7 in conference games and RIT edged a game closer to .500 overall and went one over in conference at 6-7 and 4-3. Clarkson closes out a six-game homestand next weekend when the team hosts Bard College and Vassar College.

Clarkson came out firing and led by five in just over two minutes of play when Teddy Fravel converted inside, but the Tigers responded with a 12-0 run in the next three minutes, taking the lead on a Curtis Nesbit 3-pointer and closing out the stretch on a layup from the senior guard. The Knights got back into the contest slowly, pulling to within one when Fravel hit a free throw at the 7:51 mark to make the score 27-26, but RIT went on a 6-0 spurt in just 25 seconds a few minutes later to push the advantage back to eight.

Though the Knights closed the gap to four by intermission, RIT expanded its lead to 10 when Brock Bowen drained a 3-pointer at the 17:14 mark of the second half. The margin dropped to as few as five and increased to as many as 12 over the next 10 minutes, but the Knights truly got back into striking distance when Frankie Rainville dropped in a 3-pointer from the top of the key at 6:45, making the score 65-60 in RIT's favor. Garret Delaney hit a 3-pointer from the win shortly after to pull the Knights within four, but the Tigers always seemed to have an answer at the other end. In the final minute, Ryan Miles-Ferguson spun to the basket for a layup with 34 seconds remaining to get Clarkson within three points. RIT made enough free throws in the waning seconds to keep Clarkson from any further hopes of a comeback.

Miles-Ferguson scored 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting in less than 20 minutes after having to leave early in the first half due to foul trouble. Delaney scored 15 points, shooting 5-for-8 from beyond the 3-point arc. Both Jack Dalgety and Teddy Fravel also added in nine points for the Knights.

Kevin Ryan scored 18 points on 7-for-9 shooting to lead RIT, while Brock Bowen added 13 points and nine boards. Keegan Ocorr was also just short of a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds, while both Curtis Nesbit and Chase Lewis finished in double figures with 10 points.
