Zoeller Sets Single-Game Strikeout Mark for Knights in Split at SLU

Canton, NY – Junior Olivia Zoeller threw her third one-hitter of the season and struck out a school-record 18 batters in the opener for the Clarkson University Softball team, but the Golden Knights could only come through with a split at St. Lawrence, winning the opener 4-0 but dropping the nightcap 7-6.

The Golden Knights saw their record go to 10-4 overall and 5-1 in the Liberty League, while the Saints picked up their first win to move to 1-10 and 1-7. The two teams will face one another on Saturday afternoon in another conference doubleheader at Scott Field.

Zoeller, who threw a five-inning no-hitter against the Saints in the season-opener, was on again for Clarkson, allowing just a walk and a single in the seventh inning while striking out 18. She struck out the side in the first, second, and third and whiffed two in fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. In the seventh, she struck out the first hitter, lost her no-hit bid when Skyler Hein singled, but then ended the threat with two more strikeouts.

The win was far from guaranteed, however, as St. Lawrence's Gabby Slater matched zeroes with Zoeller, though Slater dodged trouble with at least one baserunner in every inning. The Knights finally broke through in the seventh when Rylee LeBourveau tripled to put pressure on the Saints. Bridget Twaits then reached on a walk and stole second, setting up Kayla Robert's two-run double to put Clarkson up 2-0. Maddie Brink then singled up the middle to plate Robert, and Brink's pinch-runner Molly Pezzano scored when Sarah Vaccaro singled as well.

Zoeller's 18 strikeouts in the game surpassed the previous mark of Jamie Bridge, who whiffed the first 17 batters she faced in a six-inning perfect game against Johnson State in April 2015.

In the second game, St. Lawrence came from four runs down in the bottom of the sixth to pick up its first win of the year. Clarkson opened with a run in the top of the first as Olivia Zoeller tripled home Bridget Twaits, but a double and a sacrifice fly put St. Lawrence up 2-1 in the bottom of the third. Clarkson scored five runs in the top of the fifth, as Twaits singled in LeBourveau and Maddie Brink doubled in both Zoeller and Robert to put Clarkson up 4-2. Pinch-runner Tatum Morris then scored on a Sarah Vaccaro triple, and Vaccaro herself came home on a wild pitch to put Clarkson up 6-2.

The Saints would load the bases in the bottom of the sixth with one out thanks to an infield single, a single up the middle and a walk. Another base on balls forced a run home to make the score 6-3, but a bases-clearing double by Margo Hopper tied the game, and Skylar Hein followed with another double to put the Saints up 7-6. Clarkson would challenge in the top of the seventh as Kayla Robert singled to open the inning, but a pop up, line out and a strikeout ended the threat as Robert never got into scoring position.

Robert finished the second game 3-for-4 at the plate, while Twaits was 2-for-4 and LeBourveau went 2-for-3.
