Knights Open Liberty League Play With Sweep of RIT

Rochester, NY – Senior Rylee LeBourveau drove in five runs and junior Olivia Zoeller allowed just a single earned run in 10 innings of work as the Clarkson University Softball team swept its opening Liberty League doubleheader with 6-2 and 10-6 victories over RIT on Monday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in the Liberty League, while the Tigers fell to 3-7 on the season and 0-4 in conference games. The two teams will meet up once again on Tuesday afternoon for another doubleheader, with the twin bill be played at Clarkson's Scott Field.

In game one, Olivia Zoeller and RIT's Torie Adler exchanged zeroes for the first four frames, with Adler allowing hits in the first, third, and fourth innings, but no runner advanced past second. Meanwhile, Zoeller was flawless through three innings thanks to five strikeouts, but she lost her perfect game and no-hitter in the fourth on an opposite field single.

The fifth saw Clarkson with gain multiple opportunities to push a run across as Alyssa Schaechinger doubled to left-center to lead off the inning. A groundout to short from Katy Aldous allowed Schaechinger to move up to third, and another groundout to second from Rylee LeBourveau sent Schaechinger home to put the Knights up 1-0. The bottom of the inning saw the Tigers threaten briefly as the leadoff hitter singled to right-center. However, when the ensuing batter tried to put down a sacrifice bunt, Zoeller jumped a step out of the circle after delivering the pitch and caught the attempt on the fly and then doubled off the runner at first to end the threat.

Clarkson took advantage of the momentum turn in the sixth. Sam Short reached on an infield single and then came all the way around as Sarah Vaccaro doubled to the base of the center field wall to put the Knights up 2-0. Clarkson then loaded the bases as Kayla Robert drew a walk and Maddie Brink reached on a fielder's choice, with Vaccaro getting to third on a miscue by the third baseman. A pitching change temporarily stalled the rally, but Amanda Riley then walked to force a run home, and a single through the right side sent two more around to put the Knights up 5-0. Rylee LeBourveau was nipped at first on a groundout for the second time in as many innings, but it once again was enough to drive in a run as Amanda Riley came home on the play, making the score 6-0.

That was more than enough for Zoeller. The Tigers did push two runs across in the bottom of the sixth, though only one was earned, but Zoeller tossed a scoreless seventh to close out the game and pick up her fourth win of the year.

Zoeller struck out eight in seven innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits and no walks. At the plate, Schaechinger was 2-for-3 with a double, a run, and a run batted in and Sam Short was 2-for-4. Rylee LeBourveau drove in a pair of runs without the benefit of a hit.

Game two was the late inning offense roll over as each team scored three in the first inning. Clarkson opened up with a run on a sacrifice fly from Sarah Vaccaro, a double down the line from Maddie Brink, and a groundout by Bridget Twaits. RIT picked up its run in the bottom of the inning with a base hit from Brianna Bilich, an error in the infield on the return throw off Bilich's hit, and a double by Jill Vorreiter. Clarkson scored again in the second as LeBourveau singled to right-center, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and then scampered home on a wild pitch. Sam Short then walked, stole second and scored on a hit by Kayla Robert. The Knights added another run in the third when Twaits doubled with one out, advanced on a wild pitch, and then finished the circuit on a sac fly by Katy Aldous to make the score 6-3. However, RIT clawed back with a run in the bottom half of the third without the benefit of a hit and then added another run in the fourth when Jennifer Vickery walked, advanced two bases on back-to-back errors, and came around on a groundout.

Both teams' game-one starters returned in relief in the second contest and the scoring settled down. Torie Adler returned in the fourth and tossed three scoreless innings, while Zoeller came back in the fifth to put up a goose egg, but the Tigers picked up a run in the bottom of the sixth by virtue of a passed ball and an error with two outs.

The middle of Clarkson's lineup came up for the top of the seventh and immediately paid dividends. With one out, Kayla Robert reached on a base on balls, Maddie Brink singled through the left side, and Alyssa Schaechinger walked to load the bases. Bridget Twaits then hit a hard bouncer through the right side to put Clarkson back up by one, 7-6. However, the big blow came from the bottom of the Knights' lineup as Rylee LeBourveau hit the ball all the way to the left-centerfield wall, clearing the bases with a triple and providing ample cushion for the bottom half of the inning.

Zoeller won her second game of the day with three innings of relief, giving up three hits and striking out four. Brink was 3-for-4 at the plate while Robert, Twaits, and LeBourveau also contributed two hits apiece in the second contest.
