Box Score
Saratoga Springs, NY – Despite a second-half charge that saw the team rally from a 14-point deficit, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team came up just short in its Liberty League opener, falling 77-76 at Skidmore College on Friday evening.

The Golden Knights fell to 0-5 on the season and 0-1 in league play while Skidmore improved to 5-1 and 1-0. Clarkson looks to pick up its first win of the season and in conference on Saturday as the team heads to Schenectady to take on Union College.

Although the Thoroughbreds hit an early 3-pointer in the first minute, the two teams were otherwise quiet for the first four minutes of the contest. However, when Ryan Miles-Ferguson hit a 3-pointer at the 16:18 mark of the first half, it got things going for both teams. Skidmore and Clarkson traded shots for the next few minutes as the Knights were able to take one-point leads on two occasions after makes from Chris Hulbert. Starting with a 3-pointer from Tautvydas Kupstas at the 12:42 mark, Skidmore went on a 19-2 run in just under five minutes to make the score 31-15, putting the Knights in a big hole. Clarkson would recover as the two teams again began to exchange baskets, and the Knights got within 11 after a Chris Hulbert 3-pointer, and then trimmed it to 10 after a free throw. A late basket from the Thoroughbreds and then a put-back at the buzzer gave Skidmore a 14-point edge at the break.

Skidmore held a 27-17 lead in rebounds and shot 6-for-14 from beyond the 3-point arc.

After just a 4-for-16 shooting effort from distance in the first half, the Knights came out firing at the start of the second, quickly reducing the deficit to single digits. Miles-Ferguson hit a 3-pointer at the 15:47 mark to pull the Knights within eight, but the margin wavered around double figures for the next five minutes. It wasn't until Hulbert hit a 3-pointer at the 8:52 mark that Clarkson was able to get within four, and four minutes later Miles-Ferguson hit a mid-range jumper to put the margin at just two.

Skidmore briefly earned a five-point lead as the Thoroughbreds were able to hit a couple of key shots in close, but Frankie Rainville nailed a 3-pointer at the 2:09 mark to make it a two-point game, and 45 seconds later Blake Gearhart converted in the lane to tie the game at 73-73 with 1:24 to go.

Following a Skidmore timeout, the Thoroughbreds were able to get a baseline jumper from Kupstas to put the Thoroughbreds back up by two and at the other end Hulbert's 3-point attempt was just off and Skidmore secured the rebound. With Clarkson forced to foul, Kupstas hit two free throws to put Skidmore up by four, and Clarkson's next 3-point attempt was blocked, ending any chance of a comeback.

Hulbert tied his career-high with 29 points, shooting 10-for-22 from the floor with six 3-point field goals while also adding in four steals. Miles-Ferguson also put forth a strong effort with 22 points on 8-for-18 shooting while also grabbing seven rebounds. Blake Gearhart also finished in double figures with 16 points and added in four assists.

For Skidmore, Kupstas led the way with 25 points on 9-for-18 shooting, including five 3-pointers. Eichelberger finished off his double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds, and Bobby Stratts had 11 points and seven boards in just 19 minutes.
