Knights Hoist Conference Tournament Plaque for Ninth Time with Sweep of SLU

Rochester, NY – For the eighth time in the tournament's 10-year history, the Clarkson University Volleyball team claimed the Liberty League's postseason title, downing St. Lawrence University in three straight sets (25-17, 25-23, 25-11) Saturday afternoon at RIT.

With the victory, the Golden Knights receive the Liberty League's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and improved to 19-9 on the season. This will be Clarkson's 11th trip to the tournament, all of which have occurred since 2009. The win over the Saints, who saw their season come to a likely end at 17-11, was Clarkson's 18th straight victory against St. Lawrence, dating back to the start of the 2011 season.

St. Lawrence, which was an upset winner in five sets over top-seeded RIT on Friday, raced out to a strong start against the Knights in the opening set, scoring nine of the first 13 points and forcing Clarkson to take a timeout in the early going. The Saints still led by four (12-8) near the midway point of the set, but Clarkson rallied with four straight to tie. The two teams tied a few more times over the ensuing points, but Clarkson ended the set on a big run, scoring eight straight. Olivia Freer and Allyson Treichel each had a pair of kills in the string, and Annabella Regan also recorded a kill.

Set number two was close from the start to its conclusion, as the teams battled back and forth with brief leads. Late in the set, the Knights picked up a slight edge with a kill from Kristin Werdine and a Saints' error, making the score 22-20, but St. Lawrence received a pair of kills from Natalie Piper to tie the set once again. Coming out of a Clarkson timeout, the Knights denied Piper with block assists from Freer and Treichel and then scored another point on a kill from Freer. A moment later, Gillian Kurtic ended the set with an emphatic kill to put the Knights up 2-0.

The third set appeared as if it would be like the first in its competitiveness, but Clarkson rolled off a run to win in a blowout. The Knights led by just two (10-8), but six straight points helped Clarkson quickly double up the Saints. Down by nine a few points later, the Saints took a timeout in hopes of halting the Knights' momentum, but it was not to be, as Clarkson scored the final five points, with the match ending on a desperation, no-look, overpass kill from Kristin Werdine.

Isabelle Crow was named the Liberty League Tournament's Most Outstanding Player after recording 33 assists in the straight-sets win. Gillian Kurtic contributed 14 kills, Emma Baxter had 17 digs, and Cel Barrera-Lopez had four aces and 13 digs. Allyson Treichel also provided four blocks.

For St. Lawrence, Natalie Piper had a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs, while Annika Kreppein added 11 kills and 12 digs. Allie Posnick ran the offense with 31 assists and Reagan Collier-Hogan added 15 digs.
