Clarkson Sweeps Vassar to Earn Third Straight Conference Win

Potsdam, NY – For the second straight day, the Clarkson University Volleyball team reached double figures in aces and also kept its opponent to a negative hitting percentage, as the Golden Knights recorded their third consecutive conference sweep, beating Vassar College 3-0 (25-16, 25-6, 25-13) in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights moved to 12-7 overall and edged over .500 in conference play at 3-2 while Vassar fell to 5-8 and 1-3. Clarkson will return to non-league action next weekend in Pennsylvania and the following weekend the Golden Knights will close out conference play at Skidmore College and Union College.

In the opening set, Clarkson jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead as Emma Baxter knocked off three straight aces to give the Knights an early lead. Clarkson quickly extended its advantage but Vassar cut the margin to four (14-10) forcing a timeout by the home team. That lead stayed at four until late in the set, when Clarkson scored five straight points to close things out.

The second set was reasonably close in early going as Clarkson led 9-4, but the Green and Gold rolled to an easy win by claiming 16 of the final 18 points. The third set saw Vassar get back on its feet, but the Brewers still fell far short on offense to truly challenge the Knights.

Graduate student Gillian Kurtic hit .650 in the match with 14 kills against just one error on 20 swings and freshman Allyson Treichel was nearly as efficient with 12 kills and just one miscue on 22 attempts. Emma Baxter scored six aces from the service line and also added 14 digs while Isabelle Crow notched a double-double with 34 assists and 11 digs.

For Vassar, Morgan Miller led the team with five kills and also tied for the team lead with eight digs, along with Maya Levine. Madison Wilson recorded 15 assists. Overall, Vassar hit negative in the match, scoring 16 kills against 18 errors in 94 attacks.
