Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Clarkson Upended at Home by Union, 4-1

Potsdam, NY – Although it led in shots by a wide margin, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team was unable to convert its chances as the Golden Knights dropped a 3-1 decision to Union College in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon.

The Knights fell to 4-8-2 overall on the season and 2-5-0 in the Liberty League, while Union picked up its first victory of the conference campaign and improved to 6-7-1 and 1-6-0. Clarkson will hit the road midweek to take on Skidmore College before closing out the regular season at home against Rensselaer next Saturday.

The Golden Knights controlled possession for much of the first 10 minutes and that proved to pay dividends in the early going. With the ball in the Union defensive end, Colin Burnell controlled the ball on the right side of the field and sent a through ball near the side of the box to Taro Hayashi. The junior transfer had a one touch to settle and then sent a pass through traffic to Jack Donnelly at the far post and Donnelly converted at the 12:45 to put the Knights up 1-0.

Despite a deficit in shots, Union would take advantage of its opportunities, especially in the second half. The Dutchmen tied the game in the 36th minute of the first half as Sebastian Santelices scored on what may have initially been a pass into the box. Taking a set piece from roughly 30 yards out near the Union bench, Santelices sent a ball soaring into the box where another Union forward attempted to head the ball in. That proved to be enough of a distraction as the ball scooted past Clarkson keeper Bryan Benitez at 35:53.

With momentum on its side, Union scored in the first few minutes of the second half on a solid play from Diego Pascual-Sanchiz. Picking up the ball on the right sideline, Pascual-Sanchiz chipped the ball forward to Alan Daniel, and Pascual-Sanchiz followed with a sprint into the box, volleying a pass from Daniel into the net from about 12 yards out at 49:19.

Thirteen minutes later, Union picked up an insurance goal, scoring off a free kick. On the left sideline, from about 25 yards out, Sebastian Santelices hit a long cross to the opposite post, where he found Evan Perry, and Perry was able to slip the ball past the Clarkson defense just inside the post at 62:15. The Dutchmen added another goal in the final minute as Craig Miller scored off a pass from Diego Pascual-Sanchiz at 89:39.

Clarkson finished with a 16-8 edge in shots overall, but the Knights' lead was smaller in shots on goal (6-5). Sean Speck stopped five shots for Union and Bryan Benitez had one save for Clarkson.
