CU Men's Basketball Preview - vs. Vassar/Bard (1/31-2/1)

Closing out a home stand that has included three straight weekends in Potsdam, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team will host Vassar College and Bard College on Friday and Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Series vs. Vassar: Clarkson saw a three-game winning streak against Vassar come to an end the first weekend of January, and the Knights are 24-15 all-time against the Brewers. The Green and Gold forced 17 turnovers and committed just four of their own, but Vassar shot 68.0% from the floor in the second half.

The Series vs. Bard: Three of the last four years the Golden Knights have split with Bard, but Clarkson will be looking for its second sweep in a five-year span when the Green and Gold face the Raptors on Saturday. Clarkson won the first contest 77-55, holding the Raptors to 30.9% shooting in early January.

Key Stats for Clarkson (4-13 overall, 2-8 Liberty League): The first time out against Bard, senior Matt Higgins poured in 28 points in just 23 minutes, one of his four 20-point games this season. Versus Vassar, Chris Hulbert tossed in 20 points on five 3-pointers, one of his five 20-point games in 2019-20. Hulbert leads the Liberty League in 3-point field goals made with 55 and is third in the conference in scoring at 15.7 points per game. Higgins ranks ninth in scoring at 13.8 points per contest.

Key Stats for Vassar (7-10 overall, 3-7 Liberty League): Zach Johnson posted 20 points and 15 rebounds in the win against Clarkson the first time around, and he averages 9.9 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest while shooting 57.7% from the floor. Zach Bromfeld, another inside presence for the Brewers, is second in the conference in rebounding at 8.9 per contest and averages a team-best 13.6 points per game. Bromfeld scored double figures in nine straight contests before last weekend when he was held to 7.5 ppg. Kevin McAuliffe provides an outside threat with 35 3-pointers this year.

Key Stats for Bard (0-16 overall, 0-10 Liberty League): Freshman Elliot Harris ranks fourth in the conference in scoring at 15.6 points per game and is third in both 3-pointers made (49) and 3-point field goal percentage (43.0%). He has been even better as of late, averaging 20.8 ppg and shooting 45.9% (17-for-37) from beyond the 3-point arc in the last four games. Stamatis Koulouris (12.1 ppg) and Stefanos Psarras (10.4 ppg) are each averaging double figures as well. The Raptors rank last in the conference in both offense (58.6 ppg) and scoring defense (80.1 ppg).
