Last Second 3-Pointer Leads Skidmore Past Clarkson, 86-84

Potsdam, NY – A 3-pointer by Riley Greene with only four-tenths of a second left in the game allowed Skidmore College to escape with a last-second win over the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team 86-84 in Liberty League action Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 4-9 on the season and 2-4 in conference games while Skidmore moved to 4-9 and 3-3 in league contests. Clarkson will play Ithaca at 2:00 pm on Saturday while the Thoroughbreds head to St. Lawrence.

Each team made 12 3-pointers in the game, but Skidmore shot 52.2% from distance and 59.6% from the field overall, making up for a huge deficit in turnovers (19-3).

Clarkson came out burying shots from long-range including two from Roburt Welch in the opening minutes, but early foul trouble on Welch and Chris Hulbert sent them to the bench forcing the Golden Knights' freshman reserves into action. Clarkson jumped out to a nine-point advantage after Reese Swedberg banked in a 3-pointer to give the Green and Gold a 20-11 advantage. However, Skidmore took little time in getting back into the game, taking its first lead at the 26-25 mark when Harrison Eichelberger hit a 3-pointer at the 10:52 mark. From then on, the two teams battled back and forth, exchanging mini-runs. Eichelberger kept Skidmore in the game with 17 first-half points, while Ryan Miles-Ferguson slashed his way to the basket repeatedly, gaining eight points and six rebounds.

With the game tied 44-44 late, Blake Gearhart stole the ball and converted quickly to give the Knights the lead and Clarkson followed up with another basket when Matt Higgins drove and finished. Eichelberger scored at the other end and Miles-Ferguson got inside for a make late, but Skidmore closed to within three on a late free throw.

Clarkson committed just a single turnover and forced Skidmore into nine miscues, which helped offset the Thoroughbreds 57.1% shooting from the field (16-for-28) and 24-14 rebounding advantage.

Although Skidmore took the lead in the early moments of the second half, Robert Welch knocked down two more 3-pointers to push his total to 14 in just a little over six minutes of game play to put the Knights up eight (59-51). Skidmore responded with an 18-4 run over the next eight minutes to gain a six-point advantage and maintained its lead for the next few moments. Clarkson got back into the game with a Chris Hulbert 3-pointer at 6:14, tied the game with a pair of free throws by Hulbert at 5:08, and then jumped back ahead on a 3-pointer by Ryan Miles-Ferguson. Another basket by Miles-Ferguson with 2:30 left had the Knights up by three with 2:30 to go, but Riley Greene converted in the lane to draw the Thoroughbreds back to within one. Each team's offense stalled on the next few possessions and Clarkson looked to put the game away in the final minute. However, Skidmore's defense did the job against the Knights, allowing only a desperation 3-pointer with the shot clock running down, allowing Skidmore with the last chance. Greene took advantage, making a 3-pointer about a step to the right from the top of the key, swishing his attempt nearly with only four-tenths of a second to go. Clarkson's desperation heave from three-quarters court came up short and allowed Skidmore to escape with the win.

Hulbert scored 19 points to lead the Knights, going 6-for-11 from the floor and 4-for-9 from the arc, while Welch scored 15 points in just 16 minutes, shooting 5-for-9 from the field with four more 3-pointers. Miles-Ferguson came off the bench for 17 points and seven rebounds and Blake Gearhart added 11 for the Knights.

For Skidmore, Tautvydas Kupstas scored a game-high 31 points, shooting 10-for-16 with six 3-pointers and Harrison Eichelberger added 24 off the bench. Greene came alive in the second half, scoring 13 of his 17 points in the final 20 minutes.

For the second straight game, Clarkson was light on mistakes with just three turnovers, scoring 23 points off the miscues of its opponent. However, Skidmore shot 59.6% from the floor (31-for-52) and held the edge on the boards (43-25).
