Clarkson Falls in Liberty League Elimination Game, 4-2

Ithaca, NY – Just a few hours after dropping a tough 1-0 decision to top-seeded Ithaca, the Clarkson University Softball team lost another heartbreaker to University of Rochester, falling 4-2 against the Yellowjackets in the Liberty League Tournament's first elimination game.

The Golden Knights saw their season end at 25-15 overall, while Rochester edged forward to 20-18.

Rochester was held scoreless through the first four frames, but the Yellowjackets picked up two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings on two-run homers.

After 10 scoreless frames in its first game against Ithaca, the Knights endured two more zeroes before posting their first run of the tournament in the top of the third. Danielle Whitham reached on a one-out single and, after a fly out, came around on a double to center by Michele Winn to put the Knights up 1-0.

Clarkson scored again in the top of the fifth as several runners reached consecutively. Rylee LeBourveau started things off with an infield single and then Raeanna Dunn singled up the middle. Danielle Whitham reached on a fielder's choice, but LeBourveau was eliminated on the play for the first out. Liz Caggiano then singled to center to load the bases. A miscue by the Rochester defense allowed Michele Winn to reach on an error, and Dunn scored to put Clarkson up 2-0.

The Knights' lead was quickly taken away in the bottom half of the fifth. With one down, Sammi Re doubled down the left field line, but it appeared as if Clarkson might get out of the jam when the next hitter was retired. However, Alizah Ayon came through again for the Yellowjackets, homering to left-center, her 13th bomb of the year.

In the bottom of the sixth, Rochester took the lead, again using the long ball. Gianna Melillo reached on an error early in the inning and then came home on a Tori Anne Hah home run to left, her third shot of the season.

In the top of the seventh, Dunn started things off by reaching on a walk, bringing the potential tying run to the plate. Dunn stole second and third, but was stranded as the next three hitters were retired, ending the game.

Sam Mennig took the loss for Clarkson, giving up two earned runs (four total) and seven hits in six innings of work with no walks and a strikeout. Hannah Leahy was let off the hook for the Yellowjackets, as Addy Szczerba came on in relief and held Clarkson in check for the final three innings of the game, giving up just one hit and one walk.
