Ithaca Sweeps Knights, 7-0 and 1-0

Ithaca, NY - Although the team was unable to score over 14 innings, the Clarkson University Softball team was in both games against the nationally-ranked Ithaca Bombers, dropping game one 7-0 and falling in game two by a score of 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 14-10 overall and 1-3 in the Liberty League while the Bombers improved to 15-5-1 and 4-0 in conference games. Clarkson next takes on fellow Upstate New York foes SUNY Potsdam and Plattsburgh State in midweek doubleheaders.

Clarkson outhit Ithaca in the first game 10-8, but the Bombers were the only team to push any runs across. Ithaca scored once in the first inning as Vanessa Brown led off the frame with a double to left-center. After a pair of outs looked like the inning would be scoreless, Abby Shields delivered an RBI single to make it 1-0. Ithaca would be quiet until the fourth with three soft singles, including two bunts, as Shields once again drove in a run with an infield single to put Ithaca on top 2-0.

The Knights threatened in the sixth inning with Liz Caggiano and Michele Winn opening up with back-to-back singles. Two strikeouts followed, but Kayla Robert singled to right to load the bases, putting the go-ahead run on first. Alas, none of the runners would complete the circuit as another strikeout ended the scoring chance. The Bombers took advantage in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases with just one out. Gabby Laccona singled home one run, but the biggest blast came next when Haley White homered to center to clear the bases for a 7-0 Ithaca lead.

Liz Caggiano finished the game 3-for-4 and Kayla Robert was 3-for-3. Raeanna Dunn also went 2-for-4 for the Knights. Haley Congdon went five innings to earn the win for the Bombers with Emily Holden closing things out with two scoreless frames of relief.

In game two, Clarkson's Olivia Zoeller and Ithaca's Beth Fleming matched up in a pitchers' duel as the lone run came in the third inning. With two outs in the bottom half of that inning, Vanessa Brown was able to hit a solo home run for a 1-0 Ithaca lead. Clarkson would make the Bombers nervous in the top of the seventh when Sarah Vaccaro and Kayla Robert each walked. Rylee LeBourveau reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners, but Fleming got a strikeout to end the threat and the game.

Zoeller tossed six strong innings, giving up just three hits and no walks with four strikeouts. Fleming also gave up just three hits and allowed three walks while striking out nine over seven frames.
