Overwhelming Second Half Gives Knights 19-7 Win Over Skidmore

Potsdam, NY – A dominant second half performance by the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team allowed the Golden Knights to get on the winning side of things in conference play as the Green and Gold earned a 19-7 Liberty League victory over Skidmore College on Wednesday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 6-4 on the season and 1-2 in league play while Skidmore dropped to 3-7 and 0-4. Clarkson heads out on the road this weekend when it faces Bard College.

Clarkson led by just two at the break after a fairly even first half. Skidmore jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter, but the Knights scored three straight down the stretch, including two in the final 35 seconds to take a lead that they would never relinquish. The Knights tacked on three more to start the second for a four-goal lead, pushed by a pair of well-placed shots by Conor Bartlett. However, Skidmore picked up two goals in the final six minutes of the quarter to get back within two.

Although the offense was pretty diverse at the start of the third quarter, Pierce Currie took over to put the game out of reach. The junior assisted on a Bartlett goal at 8:07 then picked up scores at 7:17 and 4:37 in the third. At the start of the fourth he scored at 12:17 and 11:02, with the final goal coming on a quick groundball pick up and put back after a save by the Skidmore goalkeeper. That last goal from Currie put the Knights up by 10 (16-6) with 11 minutes left and Clarkson mostly played keep-away for the remainder of the contest.

Clarkson outshot Skidmore 48-25, but the advantage was 28-5 in the second half. Likewise, shots on goal were 30-14 overall but it was a 16-3 edge for the Knights in the second half. Clarkson also held a 22-7 lead in faceoffs and a 47-21 edge in groundballs.

Currie finished with a career-best nine points on eight goals and an assist while Bartlett was nearly as prolific with eight points on five goals and three helpers. Cioffi and Brett Brillhart each added a goal and assist. Riley Holzman won 18 of his 25 tries on faceoffs with seven groundballs and Derek Beatty forced Skidmore to cough up the ball for four caused turnovers while adding three groundballs. Kevin Dyckman made seven saves in 56-plus minutes and Matt Yonko played the last three minutes and change for the Knights.

For Skidmore, Will Lukas and Alex Miller each scored two goals with an assist and Eric Megnia tossed in two goals. Tim Rahill stopped 11 shots in the Skidmore crease.
