Knights Drop Pair to RPI, 11-5 and 7-6

Potsdam, NY – Despite a late comeback of three runs in the top of the seventh, the Clarkson University Baseball team could not hold on to the lead in the bottom half of the frame and suffered a sweep against Rensselaer, dropping the opener 11-5 and then falling in game two 7-6 on a walk-off hit at Jack Phillips Stadium.

The Golden Knights fell to 17-15 overall and 11-7 in the Liberty League, while the Engineers improved to 17-15 overall and 13-7 in conference games. Clarkson closes out the regular-season with a four-game set against St. Lawrence University.

In the first game, the Engineers struck for two runs in the bottom of the opening inning as one run came home on an error and another came in on a Richard Drum single through the right side of the infield. Clarkson came back with three runs in the top of the third, with the first run coming around on a fielder's choice by Tommy Bianchi. A few batters later the bases were loaded, allowing Mike Nee's walk to force in a run. Vincent Granuzzo then singled between the shortstop and third baseman to plate another run, putting the Knights up 3-2.

The Engineers put up six in the top of the fourth with the highlight of the inning coming on a Jake Defayette two-run double to right-center, as the Engineers were able to put up their number on just five hits. The fifth saw RPI score three more with the team loading the bases on a pair of walks and a hit batsman. Two straight run-scoring singles followed, as did a bases loaded walk, to make the score 11-3.

Clarkson responded with two runs in the top of the sixth, but it proved to be too little too late. Nolan Duda and Joe Stockman each singled and moved up a base on a wild pitch, allowing Mike Tito's single up the middle to score Duda. Stockman then came around on a Brad Pearson single for the game's final, 11-5.

Mike Mieczkowski was 3-for-3 in the first game and both Tito and Stockman went 2-for-4. For RPI, Defayette, Austin Lawrence and Joseph Curci each had two hits and two runs batted in.

Game two was a more tightly contested battle as the teams traded runs for the first three and a half innings. The Engineers scored in the bottom half of the first on a Cole Paquin run-scoring single, but Clarkson responded with a run in the top of the second. Mike Mieczkowski singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch and finished the trip around the bases on a double from Mike Krick. RPI scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third, but Mieczkowski again manufactured a run by singling, moving to second on a wild pitch, swiping third and then coming home on a ground out by Nate Burns.

In the bottom of the fourth, RPI scored three to regain the lead, with George Rainer delivering a two-run single and Jake Defayette driving in another with a hit. Clarkson chipped away one run of the deficit as Mieczkowski once again reached on a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, and rounded third to score on a Mike Krick single.

The seventh held enough action for an entire game. Mike Tito began Clarkson's rally with a one-out single and moved to second on a hit by Caleb Doyle. Brad Pearson then singled through the right side to send Tito home and Mieczkowski this time plated a run with a single to right as well, tying the game at 5-5. After the runners moved up on a wild pitch, Granuzzo singled hard through the left side to score one run, giving Clarkson a 6-5 advantage. With one runner on first and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Richard Drum gave RPI hope with a single through the right side, putting runners on first and second. Jack Moncour then doubled to the left-center gap as both base runners flew around the bases to end the game.

Mieczkowski finished 3-for-3 in the contest with three runs scored and Krick was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in. Jake Scurrah took the loss for Clarkson, allowing six hits in 2.2 innings but also striking out six in that time. For RPI, Defayette, Paquin, Curci, Moncour and Rainer each had two hits.
