Knights See Season-Opening Winning Streak Halted by RIT

Potsdam, NY – Four different players recorded five points for RIT as the third-ranked Tigers ended the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team's three-game winning streak with an 18-8 decision over the Golden Knights on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights dropped to 3-1 and 0-1 in conference games with the loss while RIT remained unbeaten at 4-0 and 1-0. Clarkson looks to get back on track next Friday when it plays at SUNY Geneseo.

The Tigers entered the game averaging 18 goals per game and their offense was humming along in the first period as the team scored six goals from four different players. Clarkson trailed just 3-2 at the midway point of the period, but RIT picked up three scores in the last five minutes to push the margin to four through 15 minutes.

A relatively quiet second period saw RIT push to an 8-3 advantage and the Tigers picked up one more goal at the very start of the third, but Tanner Cioffi scored twice on wrap around shots early in the third to give the Knights a brief spark, making the score 9-5. The goals kept coming for the Tigers, however, as the clock wound down near the end of the third as Ryan Barnable scored twice and Ryan Tandy tallied once in the final two minutes to push the gap to 14-7.  The Tigers tacked on three more goals at the start of the fourth, including two from Dawson Tait, to put the game away.

Evan Burgett scored three goals to lead the Golden Knights, with Tanner Cioffi adding two and Shane Kilday, Conor Bartlett and Pierce Currie each scoring one goal. Burgett also produced five groundballs while Currie caused two turnovers and also picked up two groundballs. Kevin Dyckman made 16 stops and recorded four groundballs in the Clarkson crease.

For RIT, Dawson Tait (3-2-5), Cam Isaac (4-1-5), Shawn Nally (0-5-5) and Ryan Barnable (3-2-5) contributed heavily to a diverse offense. Ryan Tandy also scored four goals and Quinn Commandant added three points (1-2-3). Nick Montemorano was 12-for-18 on faceoffs and added six groundballs, while Matt Pogue also chipped in six groundballs. Walker Hare stopped 14 shots in net for RIT in 53:47 before being relieved by Holden McDonald for the last six-plus minutes.

RIT finished with a 52-41 edge in shots (34-24 in shots on goal) and also led in groundballs 45-26.
