Clarkson Completes Four-Game Sweep of Vassar

Poughkeepsie, NY – A quality outing from senior Ryan Riley and 18 more runs completed an overwhelming four-game sweep for the Clarkson University Baseball team as the Golden Knights defeated Vassar College 7-1 and 11-8 on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson improved to 8-6 on the season and 4-0 in the Liberty League while the Brewers dropped to 8-11 overall and 3-5 in conference games. The Green and Gold are scheduled for a four-game set at University of Rochester next weekend.

For the weekend, the Golden Knights pounded out 52 hits and reached base another 26 times via the walk, producing 49 runs overall.

In Saturday's first game, however, it looked like runs might be at a premium as neither team scored for the first three frames. Riley allowed just two infield singles in Vassar's first four rounds to the plate, but the Golden Knights made sure that his effort would not be useless with a strong bottom of the fourth inning. Brad Pearson struck out, but reached on a wild pitch and later scored on an error. Joe Stockman later singled home Mike Nee to put Clarkson up 2-0. Mike Messier followed with a seemingly harmless sacrifice bunt, but two errors on the play sent Stockman, Nolan Duda and Messier all the way around for a 5-0 lead.

Vassar responded with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth, but it was all the Brewers could muster offensively. Clarkson tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fifth as Pearson doubled home Nate Burns, who led off the inning with a single, and Nee delivered a sacrifice fly to score Pearson.

Game two, however, was an entirely different story compared to the first game. For the first time all series, both teams really put together some offense in game two of Saturday's doubleheader, scoring a combined 19 runs. Vassar got out of the gate with two runs in the top of the first as Daniel Bonfiglio opened the game with a single and then came home on Matt Martino's home run to left. Vassar loaded the bases with no outs, but a strikeout and a double play ended the threat for Clarkson starter Kyle Locklear.

The Knights immediately picked Locklear up, scoring three in the bottom half of the first. Mike Tito singled up the middle and advanced on a wild pitch, allowing Brad Pearson's single to score him from second. Pearson then stole second and came around on Vincent Granuzzo's single and the first baseman later came around on Nolan Duda's groundout to put Clarkson up 3-2.

Clarkson picked up another run in the bottom of the second with a run-scoring single by Joe Stockman and in the bottom of the third Stockman delivered another RBI-single to score Caleb Doyle and Mike Tito drove in another run.

In the top of the fourth, Vassar connected for four runs as Matt Martino took advantage of a bases loaded situation with a two-out grand slam to center field, tying the game at 6-6. The Brewers' offense slowed after that big blow, but Clarkson continued to pour on the runs. Mike Nee plated a pair with a two-run single in the sixth and Caleb Doyle scored on a fielder's choice to make it 9-6 through six frames. In the bottom half of the seventh, Pearson doubled home Tito and Tommy Bianchi scored on a wild pitch for a five-run Clarkson advantage. Vassar chipped away with RBI doubles from Jason Salerno and Brent Shimoda in the eighth, but a quiet ninth gave Clarkson the win.

Nate Burns earned the win in relief for the Knights, pitching 5.1 innings with six strikeouts. At the plate, Mike Tito was 2-for-3 and walked three times, scoring twice in time on the bases. Pearson was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two more driven in and Stockman was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs batted in.
