Mennig Throws Gem, Winn 6-for-6 in Knights Split at Oswego

Oswego, NY – Junior catcher Michele Winn went 6-for-6 in the Clarkson University Softball doubleheader Tuesday against Oswego State, but the Golden Knights could only muster a split against the Lakers, dropping game one 4-2 and winning the nightcap 2-1.

The Golden Knights moved to 12-6 overall while the Lakers pushed their mark to 3-9. Clarkson faces St. John Fisher in another midweek doubleheader on Wednesday.

In game one, the Knights jumped out in front with a run in the top of the first as Danielle Whitham doubled to left to start the rally and then Winn singled through the right side with a two-out RBI. A two-run homer from Oswego's Angela Frampton put the Lakers on top, though Clarkson tied the game in the top of the third as Liz Caggiano plated Raeanna Dunn with a single.

The Lakers reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the third when Erin Sweeney reached on a double and then came around on an error, and Oswego tacked on one more with a two-out double from Jessica Roe in the fourth. Clarkson challenged the Lakers in the top of the seventh by loading the bases with just one out, but a fly out and strikeout ended the threat.

Winn went 3-for-3 in the game while freshman Olivia Zoeller took the loss, tossing six innings of six-hit ball and striking out five. Brianna Harrington gained the win by throwing 6.1 innings, allowing eight hits and no walks with a strikeout. Frampton came on to get the last two outs to earn the save.

Game two saw the Knights score in the first once again with Winn singling through the right side to score Raeanna Dunn, who had reached on an infield single, stole second and then took third on a groundout. The Lakers saw three runners reach in the bottom half of the inning, but Sam Mennig wiggled out of the jam and then sent the Oswego hitters down in order in the second, third, and fourth innings. The Lakers had one hitter reach in both the fifth and sixth, but Mennig maintained her grasp on a 1-0 lead.

Clarkson picked up a key insurance run in the seventh as Hannah Bowen led off the frame with a single. Rylee LeBourveau looked to move her up a base with a sacrifice bunts, but two errors allowed LeBourveau to reach second and Bowen to come around to score on the play, making it 2-0. It turned out to be an important run, as Brianna Harrington delivered a two-out run-scoring single in the seventh to draw the Lakers within one, but Mennig closed out the game with a strikeout.

Winn again was 3-for-3, raising her average 69 points on the day (.321 to .390). Mennig threw seven strong innings, striking out six with no walks and just four hits allowed. Angela Frampton took a tough-luck loss, giving up just a single earned run and six hits in seven innings of work.
