Clarkson Heads Back to Lake Placid

For the second consecutive season Clarkson University is back in Lake Placid for the ECAC Hockey Championship Tournament and will be striving for the program's sixth conference crown. The Golden Knights advance after sweeping Yale (3-1, 5-2) in quarterfinal round action this past weekend at Cheel Arena.

Clarkson will meet up with Harvard in the semifinal round on Friday in Lake Placid for the second consecutive season. Face off is slated for 7:30 p.m. Cornell and Brown will battle in the other semifinal game at 4:00 p.m. at the 1980 Rink – Herb Brooks Arena. Semifinal winners will play in Saturday's Championship game at 7:30 p.m.

Guided, by ECAC Hockey Coach of the Year Casey Jones, now in his eighth year behind the Clarkson bench, and assistants Josh Hauge and Brent Brekke, the Knights are ranked ninth in the national polls with a 24-10-2 overall record. The Green and Gold tied for third in the 12-team conference standings, along with Harvard, with a 13-7-2 league mark.

• Clarkson has been a force in the ECAC since the league was formed at the start of the 1961-62 season. The Knights have participated in 57 of the conference's 58 postseason tournaments, winning five league championships (1966, 1991, 1993, 1999, 2007). Clarkson owns a 96-80-5 record in the conference playoffs, and is 14-18 in the semifinal round. Clarkson has a 12-8-1 postseason record in seven years as the third seed, including winning the 1993 tournament title. The Knights advanced all the way to the tournament championship game last year as the third seed, falling in overtime 2-1 to Princeton.
• The Knights have advanced to 33 league championship tournaments and have skated in 13 title games, winning its fifth in 2007 with a 4-2 victory over Quinnipiac in the championship game at the Times Union Center in Albany. 
• Clarkson is 5-9 in ECAC Hockey Championship games. 
• Clarkson earned a first-round bye for the second time since 2008, earning the third seed after coming up just short of a top-four finish the past several seasons prior to 2018.
•    One of the few teams to hold an advantage against Clarkson in an all-time series, Harvard leads Clarkson 58-56-12 and also holds an 11-10-1 edge in ECAC Hockey postseason play. The teams are 5-5 against each other in the semifinal round. Clarkson won the last postseason meeting with a thrilling come-from-behind 5-4 overtime triumph in last year's ECAC hockey semifinal game at the 1980 Rink - Herb Brooks Arena on March 16.  The Crimson's last playoff victory over the Green and Gold was on March 5, 2001 in Game 2 of a first-round series at Cheel Arena.
•    Since 1980, Clarkson is 17-13 on the Olympic ice (200'x100') in Lake Placid and posts
a 9-10 record in the ECAC Hockey Tournament, including a 8-9 mark when it was held in Lake Placid for 10 years from 1993-2002.  Clarkson won the league championship on the 1980 Rink ice in 1993 and 1999. The Knights' last game in Lake Placid was a 6-2 win over St. Lawrence on November 24.
• The Knights' 24 wins through 36 games and .694 winning percentage this season is the best by a Clarkson team since the 2006-07 squad skated to a 25-9-5 record (.705%).
• From the start of the second half of the schedule, beginning with its Desert Hockey Classic Tournament wins over nationally ranked Arizona State (3-0) and defending national champion Minnesota-Duluth (3-1), Clarkson has gone 15-4-2. The Knights enter this weekend's ECAC Hockey Championship Tournament in Lake Placid on a seven-game unbeaten streak (5-0-2), which includes a 2-0-1 mark against the other top 4 seeds in the league playoffs.
• Clarkson's defensive effort is ranked fourth in the NCAA, allowing only 1.97 goals per game.
• Clarkson's offense is averaging 3.11 goals per game,  tied for 15th in the NCAA.
• The Knights' scoring margin is tied for 7th in the NCAA at 1.14.
• Announced as a Top 10 Finalist for the Hobey Baker Award this week, co-captain Nico Sturm leads the Green and Gold's offensive effort with 43 points, tied for 9th in the NCAA in points per game (1.19). He has tallied 14 goals and a team-high 29 assists (tied for 7th in the nation). He has set up more goals in a season than any Golden Knight since Todd White '97 and J.F. Houle'97 out up 36 assists each in 1996-97. The junior center has recorded at least one point in 31 of 36 games, and has posted 12 multiple-point outings. During his three seasons, Clarkson is 22-3 when Sturm records two-or-more points in a game. Sturm joined Clarkson's Century Club over the weekend with a goal and an assist in the ECAC quarterfinal Game 2, 5-2 victory over Yale. Sturm has 101 career points on 36 goals and 65 assists through 115 games. He becomes the first Clarkson junior to reach 100 points since Erik Cole '00 (103 points) in the 1999-2000 campaign. The last Golden Knight to reach 100 points was Allan McPherson '14 (103) in 2013-14. ECAC Hockey's Best Defensive Forward two years in a row, Sturm holds the best overall plus/minus rating in the league (+23), tied for seventh best in the nation. He is Clarkson's top center at the faceoff circle, winning 57.9% (357-260) of his draws. 
• One of 10 semifinalists for the Mike Richter Award, which annually honors the most outstanding goaltender in the NCAA, junior Jake Kielly ranks among the NCAA's best in all the major goaltending categories.  Starting all 36 games, he leads Division I in wins with 24, tied for fourth in shutouts with five,  posts a .929 save percentage (8th in the nation) and a 1.90 goals against average (6th).  He has allowed two-or-fewer goals in 26 of the 36 games. He leads all active NCAA goaltenders in career shutouts with 16. Kielly is third on the Green and Gold's all-time win list with a 62-36-13 career record.  He was named MVP of the Desert Hockey Classic, gained ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Month honors for October and January. 
Vs Harvard -The Knights and Crimson will be meeting for the 127th time in their all-time series, which first began with a 2-1 Clarkson win in Lake Placid on December 28, 1935. Harvard holds just a two-win edge in the all-time series 58-56-12, and the long-time rivals have played just as close in recent games. The Crimson are 5-4-1 in the last 10 meetings, while the series is tied 2-2-1 in the last five games. The teams split in the regular season with both winning on home ice – Harvard 4-3 in overtime on January 25 in Cambridge, and Clarkson skating to a 5-3 victory in Potsdam on February 16.

Clarkson won the last postseason meeting with a thrilling come-from-behind 5-4 overtime triumph in last year's ECAC hockey semifinal game at the 1980 Rink - Herb Brooks Arena on March 16. Jack Jacome has three goals and five assists for eight points through his first five games in the series. Nico Sturm (3-4) and Haralds Egle (2-5) have both tallied seven point against the Crimson. Jake Kielly posts a .881 save percentage, a 3.82 goals against average and a 2-4-1 mark in the series.
• The Knights' leading goal scorer, Haralds Egle has tallied 17 goals and added 20 assists for the second on the Clarkson points' list with 37. Egle has tallied 20 points (10-10) in the first 19 games of the New Year. He recorded 16 points (5-11) in 37 games last season. The junior right wing has netted a team-high five game-winning goals with four coming since late January.
• Clarkson's third leading scorer, co-captain Devin Brosseau is coming off a career game with a two-goal, one-assist effort in the Game 2 win over Yale on Saturday. The junior left wing has tallied 25 points on 12 goals and 13 assists, and leads the Knights in power-play markers with six. He also has two game-winners. Brosseau is a leading candidate for the prestigious ECAC Hockey's Student-Athlete of the Year award.
• Aaron Thow leads the Knights' offensive production from the blueline and is tied for fourth on the team in scoring with 23 points on eight goals and 15 assists. He posts a +9 plus/minus. The 2nd Team ECAC All-Star tallied 26 points (7-19) through his first three seasons with a then career-high 11 points (2-9) last year. 
• Sophomore wing Jack Jacome also has 23 points, including 18 assists. He scored on the power play and added an assist in Saturday's win over Yale.
• An early-season injury kept freshman Josh Dunne from an all-star campaign in his collegiate debut, but the center has still put up some impressive numbers Dunne has connected for 14 goals and seven assists through 29 games. He Scored a goal in both ECAC quarterfinal wins over Yale (3/15-16) along with one assist. Dunne has a current four-game point streak with three goals and two assists since the start of the month of March.
• Greg Moro is second on the Clarkson blueline and rounds out the Knights' 20-point scorers with five goals and 15 assists.  Four of his goals have come on the power play. The junior owns the best plus/minus among the Knight rearguards at +16.
• Sophomore defenseman Connor McCarthy, one of the tallest players in college hockey at 6-7,  also has recorded double-digit points with four goals and eight assists. Seven of his points have come on the power play, including three goals. He had an assist in both games in the quarterfinal sweep of Yale.
• The Knights' nine-member freshman class has combined to skate in 236 games (most of any Clarkson class) and has contributed 22% of the scoring with 28 goals and 36 assists. 
• In the final weekend of the regular season, the Knights picked up points for the first time this season when trailing after two periods, which locked up the third seed for the Green and Gold. Clarkson trailed Colgate 1-0 after 40 minutes before winning 3-2, and overcame a 2-1 second-period deficit to Cornell to gain a 2-2 tie. The Knights are 1-8-1 when behind after 40 minutes.  
• The Knights' three member Class of 2019 – Juho Jokiharju, Marly Quince and Aaron Thow - have compiled 85 victories, the most by any Clarkson senior class in 18 seasons.
• The Knights have tallied the opening goal in 26 games, going 18-6-2 when they get on the scoreboard first. 
• Clarkson starts fast and finishes even stronger, outscoring the opponents 36-20 in the first period and 44-20 over the final 20  minutes of regulation. The Green and Gold hold a 31-30 edge in the middle frame.
• The Knights' penalty kill is ranked 13th in the country at 85.7% (108-126), while the power play is ranked 17th in Division I, clicking at 21% (25-119). The Knights have gone 5-14 (35.7%) with the man-advantage over the last three games and have killed off 15 of the last 16 opponent man-advantage attempts (93.7%) over the last five games. 
• Devin Brosseau and Nico Sturm are the"Robert E. Empie '68 Men's Hockey Team Captains" while Marly Quince and Jake Kielly will serve as assistant captains.
