Clarkson Within Reach of Cleary Cup

A wild regular season of ECAC Hockey action comes to a close this weekend with virtually everything still up for grabs in the 12-team conference standings. Clarkson University still in the race for the Cleary Cup as regular season champions hosts Central NY rivals Colgate and current league-leader Cornell this weekend at Cheel Arena as part of the University's Cold Out Gold Out (COGO) Weekend. Both games are 7:00 p.m. face offs and will be broadcast over B99.3 FM and live streamed on ESPN+. Prior to Saturday's game, Clarkson will honor the Golden Knights' Class of 2019 on Senior Night.

First order of business for Clarkson is to secure a top four spot in the highly contested conference and the first-round bye in the upcoming playoffs that goes with it.   With two games left on the ECAC Hockey slate, Clarkson stands in fourth place, one point behind Harvard and Quinnipiac in second place and just two points shy of first-place Cornell. The Green and Gold are two points ahead of fifth-place Yale.  Clarkson owns a 12-7-1 ECAC Hockey mark. 

Clarkson, along with the other four teams currently in the top four of the standings, can finish anywhere from first to fifth at the end of the regular season.

Guided by eighth-year Head Coach Casey Jones, and assistants Josh Hauge and Brent Brekke, Clarkson has reached the 20-win mark for the second consecutive season with a 21-10-1 overall record and is ranked 13th in the national polls.

• Clarkson has won three straight over Colgate to improve its record to 87-53-18 in the all-time series. The Knights earned a 2-1 victory in Hamilton, NY in the first meeting this year on February 9. Clarkson took three of four points during the regular season in 2017-18, winning 5-2 on the road and skating to a 4-4 tie in Potsdam. Clarkson also knocked off Colgate in the 2018 ECAC Hockey playoffs, winning a quarterfinal-round series at Cheel Arena 2-1 (1-2, 3-0, 5-1) last March. Clarkson holds a slim two-game edge (19-17-11) over Colgate at Cheel Arena.
• The Knights' oldest current rival, Cornell leads the rivalry against the Knights 67-55-17. Cornell is coming off a 5-0 win over the Knights at Lynah Rink on February 9, which snapped a five-game regular-season winless streak (0-2-3) against the Green and Gold. The Knights shut out Cornell in both meetings last year en route to earning three of four ECAC Hockey points. Clarkson holds a 13-8-8 advantage at Cheel .
• Clarkson owns the nation's fifth-best home winning percentage (.786) with an 11-3 record at Cheel Arena.
• The Knights are coming off a three-point weekend in their final road trip on the schedule, tying Princeton 1-1 in New Jersey last Friday before knocking off 5th-ranked Quinnipiac 5-3 in Hamden, CT on Saturday. 
• Since posting an eight-game winning streak (12/8 – 1/19) the Knights split their next four weekend series, losing on Friday and winning on Saturday before gaining a tie and a win this past weekend. 
• Clarkson is 7-6-1 in Friday night games, 13-3 on Saturday and 1-1 on other days of the week.
• During the past five weekends the Knights have allowed 15 goals on Friday night, while scoring six. The past five Saturdays Clarkson has allowed just eight goals, while scoring 17.
• Through the first seven Saturday's of the 2019 portion of the schedule, Clarkson has outscored the opponents 26-9 while going 7-0 on the final day of the week. 
• Clarkson enters the final weekend on a three-game unbeaten streak (2-0-1) with 5-3 wins over 15th-ranked Harvard (2/16) and 5th-ranked Quinnipiac (2/23). The Knights are 3-1-1 in last five games, with the only loss a 1-0 setback in the final seconds to Dartmouth  (2/15). 
• Clarkson is 6-6 against Top-20 ranked teams, but has gone 5-3 in its last eight meetings against the nation's best.
• Clarkson is 19-0-1 when leading after two periods and 0-8 when trailing through 40 minutes.
• Clarkson posted its second four-goal period of the season with the four scores in the middle frame at Quinnipiac. The Knights also tallied four times in the third period of the 6-0 victory at Rensselaer (11/2).
• Clarkson's defensive effort is ranked sixth in the NCAA, allowing only 2.00 goals per game.
• Clarkson's offense is averaging 3.09 goals per game, 19th in the NCAA.
• The Knights' scoring margin is 8th in the NCAA at 1.09.
• Co-captain Nico Sturm leads the Green and Gold's offensive effort with 39 points, tied for 9th in the NCAA in points per game (1.22). He has tallied 12 goals and a team-high 27 assists (tied for 7th in the nation). The junior center has recorded at least one point in 28 of the first 32 games. Sturm recorded his 11th multiple-point game of the season with a pair of assists in Saturday's win over Quinnipiac. During his three seasons, Clarkson is 21-3 when Sturm records two-or-more points in a game. Sturm is bidding to become the next Golden Knight to join the century club with 97 career points (34-63) in 111 games. ECAC Hockey's Best Defensive Forward last season, Sturm holds the best overall plus/minus rating in the league (+21), tied for seventh best in the nation. He is Clarkson's top center at the faceoff circle, winning 56.3% (299-232) of his draws. He was named ECAC Hockey Player of the Week on December 31 and is a Clarkson Hobey Baker Award nominee.
• Haralds Egle has had the hot hand for the Golden Knights in recent games. The junior forward recorded three points (1-2) over the weekend and has netted the game-winning goal in Clarkson's past three victories. Four of his team-high five game-winning goals have come in the Knights' last five triumphs. He scored the deciding goal and added an assist on Saturday at Quinnipiac. Egle has tallied 17 points (9-8) in the first 14 games of the New Year. Egle is Clarkson's leading goal scorer with 16 and second in points with 34. He recorded 16 points (5-11) last season.
• Starting all 32 games, junior Jake Kielly ranks among the NCAA's best in all the major goaltending categories.  He is tied for most wins in Division I with 21, tied for third in shutouts with five,  posts a .929 save percentage (7th in the nation) and a 1.92 goals against average (7th).  He has allowed two-or-fewer goals in 22 of the 32 games. He leads all active NCAA goaltenders in career shutouts with 16. Kielly is tied for fifth on the Green and Gold's all-time win list with a 59-36-12 career record.  He was named MVP of the Desert Hockey Classic, gained ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Month honors for October and January and  has earned ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week accolades three times this season (11/5, 11/19, 12/31). Kielly was named one of the 20 Division I goaltenders to the watch list for the 2019 Mike Richter Award, which annually honors the most outstanding goaltender in the NCAA. He is also a Clarkson Hobey Baker Award nominee.
• Six other Golden Knights are scoring in double figures.  Through 32 games, 21 Knights have scored at least one goal and 23 of 24 skaters (with the exception of freshman defenseman Cam Ginnetti, who join the team in the second semester) have recorded at least one point. 
• Clarkson's freshman class played a big role in Saturday's win at Quinnipiac with four of the five goals coming from the Class of 2022.
• Freshman Anthony Callin, one of three rookie centers for the Green and Gold, recorded his first career multiple-goal game with Clarkson's first and last scores at Quinnipiac. He has seven points, including five goals through 28 games. All his points have come in the New Year.
• Rookie defenseman Michael Underwood scored his second goal of the season and first since the 5-1 win at Union (1/11) with the Knights' second score against the Bobcats. He has played in 31 games, recording six points and a +4 plus/minus.
• Chris Klack tallied his fourth goal of the season in Saturday's win, finishing off assists from fellow freshmen Nick Campoli and Adam Tisdale. Klack has eight points in 30 games and a +6.
• The Knights' nine-member freshman class has combined to skate in 208 games (most of any Clarkson class) and has contributed 22% of the scoring with 25 goals and 32 assists.
• Aaron Thow leads the Knights' offensive production from the blueline with 20 points on six goals and 14 assists. He posts a +8 plus/minus. He scored the Knights' lone goal in Friday's tie at Princeton. Thow, one of just three seniors on the Clarkson roster, tallied 26 points (7-19) through his first three seasons with a then career-high 11 points (2-9) last year. 
• The Knights will honor their four-year veterans on Senior Night this Saturday. Clarkson's Class of 2019 – Juho Jokiharju, Marly Quince and Aaron Thow - make their final regular-season appearance before the home crowd. Over their four-year careers, the Knights' seniors have compiled 82 victories, skated to four winning seasons, including three 20-win campaigns, hoisted three in-season tournament championship trophies, earned a home-ice berth in the ECAC Hockey playoffs all four years, won three conference postseason series, skated in a league tournament championship game and made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.  The seniors are once again helping to lead the Green and Gold, who have been ranked among the best teams in the nation throughout the season, to another successful campaign.
 • Greg Moro is second on the Clarkson blueline in scoring with 17 points. Four of his five goals have come on the power play. He shares the plus/minus lead among the Knight rearguards, along with classmate Jordan Schneider, with a +13
• The Knights have tallied the opening goal in 23 of the 32 games, going 16-6-1 when they get on the scoreboard first. However, Clarkson has opened the scoring just twice in the last eight games.
• The Knights' penalty kill is ranked 15th in the country at 85% (96-113). Clarkson held Quinnipiac's third-ranked power play scoreless in its three man-advantage chances on Saturday.  In the 5-0 loss at Cornell (2/8), Clarkson allowed the Big Red to score twice on three power plays. That was the first time the Knights allowed multiple power-paly goals in a game, since a dismal 2-of-6 shorthanded effort  in the 6-3 loss at Canisius (11/10). 
• Clarkson's power play is ranked 22nd in Division I, clicking at 19.4% (20-103). The Knights went just 3-of-21 (14.2%) with the man-advantage in February.
• Clarkson starts fast and finishes strong, outscoring the opponents 31-20 in the first period and 37-18 over the final 20  minutes of regulation. The Green and Gold hold a 30-25 edge in the middle frame.
• Goaltender Kris Oldham, a junior transfer serving a year-in-residence and not NCAA eligible to compete for the Knights until 2019-20, will be competing for the U.S. Men's National University Team at the 2019 Winter World University Games from March 1-9 in Krasnoyarsk, Russia.

Scouting Colgate
Looking to secure a top eight finish and home ice in the first round of the ECAC Hockey playoffs, Colgate brings a three-game unbeaten streak (2-0-1) to Cheel. The Raiders earned a sweep in Hamilton, NY this past weekend. Colgate skated past Union 5-1 and edged Rensselaer 2-1 in overtime. Colgate is 4-8-2 in road games. The Raiders can finish anywhere from 7-11 in the conference standings. 

Scouting Cornell
Ranked 11/12th in the national polls, Cornell travels to the North Country holding a slim lead for the top spot in ECAC Hockey. The Big Red, who play at St. Lawrence on Friday, have a one-point edge in the race for the Cleary Cup, owning a 12-5-3 record in league play. Since sweeping Clarkson (5-0) and St. Lawrence (3-1) at Lynah Rink on February 8-9, Cornell has gone 1-2-1 in its last four games. The Big Red snapped out of a three-game winless stretch (0-2-1) with Saturday's 3-1 victory over Union. The night before, Cornell dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to Rensselaer. Cornell is 6-2-3 in away games. The Big Red can finish anywhere from first to fifth when the weekend concludes.

Vs Colgate -Clarkson has won three straight over the Raiders to improve its record to 87-53-18 in the all-time series, which began during the 1927-28 campaign. The Knights earned a 2-1 victory in Hamilton, NY in the first meeting this year on February 9. Clarkson took three of four points during the regular season in 2017-18, winning 5-2 on the road and skating to a 4-4 tie in Potsdam. Clarkson also knocked off Colgate in the 2018 ECAC Hockey playoffs, winning a quarterfinal-round series at Cheel Arena 2-1 (1-2, 3-0, 5-1) on March 9-11. Clarkson holds a slim two-game edge (19-17-11) over Colgate at Cheel Arena. Nico Sturm has a team-high seven points (1-6) through eight games of the series, while Haralds Egle and Marly Quince have both scored three goals against the Raiders. Jake Kielly posts a .932 save percentage, a 1.61 goals against average and a 5-2-1 record with two shutouts through eight games against Colgate.

Vs Cornell - Cornell is the Knights' oldest current rival having first played during the 1922-23 campaign with the teams battling to a 0-0 tie in Ithaca. The Big Red lead the rivalry against the Knights 67-55-17. Cornell is coming off a 5-0 win over the Knights at Lynah Rink on February 9, which snapped a five-game regular-season winless streak (0-2-3) against the Green and Gold. The Knights shut out Cornell in both meetings last year en route to earning three of four ECAC Hockey points. The Green and Gold skated to a 4-0 victory at Lynah Rink on November 18, 2017 and battled to 0-0 tie in Potsdam on February 9, 2018 for their 15th whitewash all-time against the Big Red. Clarkson holds a 13-8-8 advantage over Cornell at Cheel Arena. 
Devin Brosseau has a team-high four points (1-3) in the series. Juho Jokiharju leads the way with two goals.  Jake Kielly holds a .905 save percentage and a 2.03 goals against average for a 2-3-3 record.
