Clarkson Comes Up Short Against Dartmouth

An opportunity for Clarkson University to move up in the ECAC Hockey standings did not go as planned for the Golden Knights who suffered a 1-0 loss to Dartmouth College at Cheel Arena on Friday night.

Clarkson outshot the Big Green (9-12-3, 8-7-2) 29-24, but the visitors made their last one count to break a scoreless tie. With just 33 seconds left in regulation, freshmen Drew O'Connor took a pass from the right boards by Clay Han and tipped in a shot at the top of the crease for the lone goal of the game.

The Knights, with four power plays in the third period,  had several excellent scoring chances over the final 20 minutes to get on the scoreboard, but a couple of big saves by Dartmouth's Adrian Clark kept the Green and Gold off the scoreboard. Clark robbed the Knights' leading scorer, junior Nico Sturm (Augsburg, Germany) on a shorthanded breakaway with seven minutes left to play, and then prevented overtime by denying junior Devin Brosseau (St. Lambert, QUE) at the doorstep with one second left.

Clarkson started out slow and was outshot 12-4 in the first period. The Knights outshot Dartmouth 12-8 in the middle frame and 13-4 in the final stanza.

Junior Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN) finished with 23 saves in the Clarkson net.

The Knights went 0-of-5 on the power play, while Dartmouth was 0-of-2 on its man-advantage chances.

Clarkson, which has been shut out the last two Friday nights, falls to 19-10 overall and 10-7 in the conference. The Knights host Harvard, 3-2 winners over St. Lawrence on Friday, tomorrow in a 7:00 p.m. contest.

With five games remaining in the regular season, Clarkson stands in fifth place in the ECAC Hockey standings, one point out of fourth, two points shy of second and five points behind league-leader Cornell. The Knights are also just two points ahead of Brown and Dartmouth in sixth place and four in front of eighth-place Union.
