Huge Second Half Gives Knights 85-55 Win Over RIT

Rochester, NY - Fifty-six second half points by the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team turned a one-point deficit into a 30-point win as the Golden Knights earned an 85-55 win over RIT on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 6-17 overall and 5-11 in the Liberty League while the Tigers dropped to 5-18 and 2-14. Clarkson faces Skidmore College and Rensselaer this weekend to close out the 2018-19 season.

The key part of the game came in the final 12 minutes as the Knights went on a 23-0 run over the course of seven minutes, expanding their lead from one to 24 points. During that stretch, RIT was 0-for-6 from the field with seven turnovers and missed four straight free throws. The Tigers made just one field goal in the final 12-plus minutes of the contest.

Although the game was close for the first 28 minutes, the Knights led through most of the first half, taking the lead on their first possession of the game when Keenan Gayle hit a 3-pointer. Roburt Welch buried another 3-pointer seven minutes later to push the advantage to seven (14-7), but RIT came back to tie the game twice. Reese Swedberg's jumper at 6:30 put the Knights up by five, but three minutes later RIT gained its first lead of the game on a Chase Lewis shot with 3:02 to go. Although Clarkson regained the advantage, Marcell Davis hit a layup with 1:23 to go and a Cobey Adekanbi dunk with 38 seconds remaining in the half allowed the Tigers to head into the locker room with a modest one-point lead.

Clarkson quickly retook the lead at the start of the second half, but the Tigers made it appear as if the game would go down to the wire as it did the first time the two teams met. The Tigers enjoyed a three-point lead (45-42) after Jaymee Rosser converted in the paint, but the Knights came back to take the lead just a moment later. A Marcell Davis jumper with 12:22 remaining pulled the Tigers to within one (50-49), but then everything started to go Clarkson's way. Jason Phelps hit a 3-pointer at 11:51 to put the lead at four and the advantage quickly swelled to double figures on a Barryn Shark make with 9:38 remaining, putting Clarkson up 60-49. The streak continued over the next four minutes, with Matt Higgins hitting a 3-pointer at the 6:06 mark to put Clarkson up by more than 20, and two free throws from Liam Ellis had the Knights up 73-49. Two free throws by the Tigers at the 5:09 mark finally broke the scoreless streak, but the two points did little to halt the Knights charge as RIT could only muster four more points for the rest of the game.

Clarkson outscored RIT 56-25 in the second half, shooting 18-for-34 overall with eight 3-pointers and 12 free throws in as many tries. RIT made just one 3-pointer with 10 turnovers in the second half.

Matt Higgins scored 27 points and added 12 rebounds in the win, shooting 7-for-14 overall with four 3-pointers and a 9-for-10 showing from the free throw line. Reese Swedberg added in 10 points on 3-for-4 shooting and Matthew Hornak also chipped in 10 points. No player for RIT finished in double figures as Chase Lewis, Jaymee Rosser and Will Atkinson tied for the Tigers' lead with eight points.
