Clarkson Men Host St. Lawrence in Final Game at Cheel in 2019

Clarkson Men's Hockey closes out the 2019 home portion of the schedule in a big way this Saturday when the Golden Knights host archrival St. Lawrence University in ECAC Hockey action at Cheel Arena. Faceoff is at 7:00 p.m.

Off last weekend for the Thanksgiving Holiday, Clarkson posts a 10-3-1 overall record and is ranked 5th in the national polls. Guided by ninth-year Head Coach Casey Jones and Associate Head Coach Josh Hauge and Assistant Coach Mike Towns, the Green and Gold won seven of eight games in November. Clarkson stands in third place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 5-1 league mark.

In the overall series between the North Country rivals, which began in the 1925-26 campaign, the Golden Knights hold an overwhelming 129-72-11 lead. Clarkson is 7-1 against the Saints in their last eight meetings, including two non-league, overtime victories in early November. The Green and Gold downed the Saints 4-3 and 3-2 in back-to-back overtime games at Cheel Arena on November 1-2. Clarkson holds a 27-8-2 advantage over their rivals at Cheel Arena. 

 
• Defensively, Clarkson is ranked tied for fifth in the country, allowing just 1.86 goals per game. The Knights have allowed just one goal each in five of the last six games. 
• After being outshot in each of their first six games, the Knights have held the shot advantage in seven of the last eight games and tied in shots in the other (31-31 vs Cornell on Nov. 15). Clarkson limited Colgate to a season-low 16 shots on goal in the 5-1 win over the Raiders at Cheel on November 16.
• Frank Marotte has played every minute in the Clarkson goal and is rated among the top goaltenders in the country. The graduate transfer posts a .938 save percentage (9th), a 1.77 goals against average (9th) and a .750 winning percentage (tied-8th) on a 10-3-1 record. He started his Clarkson career with six consecutive 30+ save outings, including a season-high 38-save effort in 4-0 shutout over Wisconsin (ranked sixth in the country at the time) in Madison on October 25. He followed the next night, posting 37 stops in a one-goal loss to the Badgers. Marotte, who starred at Robert Morris the previous three years, has twice been selected ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week (10/14, 11/25) and was named conference Goaltender of the Month for October.
• Offensively, Clarkson is averaging 3.07 goals per game, 20th in the nation.
• Twenty of the Knights' 22 skaters have recorded at least one point and 15 players have scored at least one goal. Five different players accounted for the six goals in the weekend sweep at Brown (2-1 ot) and Yale (4-1).
• Nine different Knights have accounted for the 10 game-winning goals with sophomore Chris Klack leading the way with two deciding goals.
• Four Clarkson players are scoring in double figures, led by Devin Brosseau with 18 points. The Knights' captain, Brosseau is tied for fourth in the nation in points per game (1.50). Through 12 games, the left wing has tallied six goals and 12 assists. He tied for the conference overall point lead (13) in November and set up a league-high 10 assists.  He recorded at least one point in six of eight games for the month. ECAC Hockey Student-Athlete of the Year last season, Brosseau, a graduate student, has amassed 101 career points (38-63) through 128 games. 
• Sophomore center Josh Dunne has scored a team-high seven goals and is tied for third in the country in power-play tallies with five. The assistant captain also has seven assists. 
• Senior right wing Haralds Egles, who is coming off a two-assist effort in the 4-1 win at Yale, also has 14 points on four goals and 10 assists.  Egle and Dunne share the team plus/minus lead at +8. Egle looks to be the next Golden Knight in line to challenge for the century mark with 87 career points (34-53) through 117 games. 
• Zach Tsekos is making a significant impact up front in his first season on the ice with the Golden Knights. A junior transfer, who starred at Sacred Heart (2016-18), the center rounds out Clarkson's double-digit scorers with five goals and six assists. Tsekos tallied four points (2-2) in the weekend road sweep at Brown and Yale. He recorded two goals and one assist in the 4-1 win over the Bulldogs.
• Clarkson defensemen played a role offensively in the weekend sweep in New England. Senior assistant captain Greg Moro scored the overtime game-winner in the 2-1 victory at Brown and junior Connor McCarthy connected for the deciding goal in the 4-1 win at Yale. Senior assistant captain Jordan Schneider tallied an assist in both victories, while sophomore Brian Hurley helped set up Clarkson's opening goal at Yale.
• The penalty kill has been outstanding, ranked third in the nation (52-56, 92.9%). Only four opponents have scored on the power play against the Green and Gold. Clarkson was a a prefect 5-of-5 against Yale on the penalty kill in its last outing.
• The Knights' power play is showing signs of promise over the past four games with five goals in the last 18 man-advantage opportunities (27.7%). Overall, Clarkson is 10-51 on the power play (19.6%). 
• Tsekos (2-2), sophomore Anthony Callin (1-1), Schneider (0-2) and junior Jack Jacome (0-2) each have current two-game point-scoring streaks.
• Right wing Anthony Romano leads the Clarkson rookies in scoring with four goals and one assist.  He is a 2019 Arizona Coyotes draft choice (6th round, 176 selection). 
• The Knights are 8-0-0 when leading through two periods this season and 51-2-3 when holding the lead through 40 minutes since the 2017-18 campaign. 
• Clarkson has gotten off to solid starts, netting the first goal in nine of 14 games while outscoring the opponents 13-5 through the opening 20 minutes.  The Knights are  8-0-1 when scoring first.

• The Knights have also been strong in the third period with a 15-9 goal differential, and have traded 12 goals with the opposition in the middle frame.
• Clarkson is 4-2 in home games and 6-1-1 on the road.
• Clarkson closes out the 2019 portion of the schedule in Michigan's Upper Peninsula with a two-game set against Northern Michigan in Houghton on December 13-14.
• In its 98th season, Clarkson boasts 74 winning campaigns and a 1,472-876-163 all-time record for a .619 winning percentage since 1920-21.

• Four current Golden Knights have been selected in the NHL Draft. Junior Kris Oldham – 2015 by Tampa Bay (6th round, 153 overall), sophomore Nick Campoli – 2017 by Las Vegas (6th, 158), freshman Dustyn McFaul – 2018 by Boston (6th, 181) and freshman Anthony Romano – 2019 by Arizona (6th, 176).


Scouting St. Lawrence
After a 6-29-2 record in 2018-19, St. Lawrence under first year Head Coach Brent Brekke, a former Golden Knight assistant, has started to turn things around this season. The Saints stand at 3-11-2 overall and are 1-5 in ECAC Hockey. St. Lawrence gave Clarkson all it could handle in two non-league meetings at Cheel Arena in early November, falling in a pair of overtime contests. The Saints broke out of a five-game losing skid with a 1-1 tie against Maine in Canton this past Saturday. St. Lawrence's last win was a 3-2 overtime triumph at Union on November 9. St. Lawrence has also won at Bentley (3-0) and Mercyhurst (3-2).

The Series

The Green and Gold downed the Saints 4-3 and 3-2 in back-to-back overtime games at Cheel Arena on November 1-2. In three games last season. The Knights skated to a 6-2 non-league win in Lake Placid over the Thanksgiving break and then split a home-and-home ECAC Hockey series last December, winning 3-0 in Potsdam after dropping a 4-2 decision the night before in Canton. The Green and Gold hold a 27-8-2 advantage over their rivals at Cheel Arena. The Knights have won the last six meetings in Potsdam. St. Lawrence's last victory at Cheel was a 2-1 win on January 31, 2015.

Devin Brosseau leads the Clarkson offense against the Saints with nine points on one goal and eight assists. He tallied two assists in each victory earlier this season. Grant Cooper and Haralds Egle both have three goals in the series. Jack Jacome has tallied five assists.  Anthony Callin and Josh Dunne scored the overtime game-winners in the November victories. Frank Marotte posts a .902 save percentage and a 2.42 goals against average through two games in the rivalry.
