Hulbert's Late Three Gives Clarkson Second Straight Win

Alfred, NY – Sophomore Chris Hulbert buried a 3-pointer with 16 seconds left on the clock to lift the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team to a 73-71 victory over Alfred University on Saturday afternoon at the Special T's Tipoff Classic.

The Golden Knights moved to 2-1 on the season and will play their first home game of the season on Tuesday when they play host to Oswego State.

Clarkson trailed for most of the first 10 minutes of the contest on Saturday, but edged into the lead on a Roburt Welch 3-pointer at the 10:08 mark. The Golden Knights held a modest advantage for the remainder of the first half, falling into a tie just once late, and headed into the locker room with a six-point lead.

In the second half, that margin was pushed to nine, but Alfred made sure to keep things close, pulling back to within one (37-36) a few minutes into the frame. Near the midway mark of the second period, Hulbert buried a 3-pointer to give Clarkson an 11-point lead at 57-46 (10:43), but in less than two minutes, the Saxons trimmed it back to one point at 57-56 (8:56). Clarkson would hold on to a small lead for the rest of the half until Sam Dagon finally pulled Alfred all the way back with a 3-pointer at the 1:27 mark. Alfred turned the ball over on its next possession and failed to get the rebound on a missed free throw with 32 seconds left. Hulbert buried his 3-pointer and the Saxons were fouled before taking a shot, making just one of the two free throw attempts and never getting another shot off the rest of the way.

Hulbert finished with 19 points, going 5-for-8 from beyond the 3-point arc while Matt Higgins scored a game-high 20 points. Sam Dagon tossed in 19 for Alfred and Elliot Bowen was a rebound shy of a double-double in just 19 minutes, scoring 16 points to go along with nine boards. Cole Eells also had 13 points and six rebounds for the Saxons.
