Knights and Statesmen Battle to 0-0 Tie

Potsdam, NY – Ian Roeloffs and the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team maintained its unbeaten run in the Liberty League but came up short of a victory as the Golden Knights settled for a 0-0 tie against Hobart College Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Gold Knights moved to 6-3-2 overall and 2-0-2 in conference games, while the Statesmen saw their record go to 8-3-1 overall and 2-1-1 in conference games. Clarkson takes on Ithaca College at 4:00 pm next Saturday at Hantz Field.

Clarkson opened the game with plenty of energy, generating offense from the start. Senior exchange student Sebastian Dietachmair registered the first shot of the game at the 5:19 mark, beginning a strong stretch of offense from the Knights. Clarkson enjoyed three corner kick opportunities following Dietachmair's shot, but none of the chances finished with a shot on goal, as Cam Edme-Gerdine shot sailed wide to close the sequence. The Golden Knights held a first half advantage in shots (5-2) and corner kicks (3-0).

The second half began with Hobart carrying the play, matching Clarkson's offensive beginnings in the first 45 minutes. Ian Roeloffs made four saves in the game, but it was the post that kept Hobart off the scoreboard with less than 15 minutes remaining in regulation. Jack Fell of Hobart possessed the ball on the left side of the box and fired a shot past the outstretched arms of Roeloffs, but the attempt rang off the post to keep the game scoreless. Clarkson had several chances in the second half as well and Statesmen goalkeeper Brian Salazar kept the Knights at bay. Clarkson's best chance came late when Stephen Klimek had a chance to break the tie with about 4:30 left in regulation, but his hard shot was deflected by the Hobart defense before it ever got to Salazar.

Both squads played a conservative first overtime period generating no shots in the 10-minute period. The Statesmen outshot the Knights 3-2 in the overtime period, but no grade-A scoring opportunities resulted.

Hobart finished with a slight 15-14 advantage in shots (4-4 shots on goal) while Clarkson had the advantage in corner kicks (7-5). Ian Roeloffs made four saves for his third consecutive shutout and his fourth in his last five games. Brian Salazar also finished with four saves on the day.
