Knights Travel Back to the Midwest for Series at Wisconsin

10/23/2019 9:51:00 AM

Back on the road for Clarkson University Hockey this weekend as the Golden Knights travel to the Midwest for the second time this month. Ranked 12/13th in the national polls, Clarkson will face off in a two-game series against 6th-ranked Wisconsin this Friday and Saturday at the Kohl Center in Madison. Both games are 7:00 p.m. CT starts.

Guided by ninth-year Head Coach Casey Jones and Associate Head Coach Josh Hauge and Assistant Coach Mike Towns, the Knights stand at 2-1-1. Clarkson spilt in home-opening games at Cheel Arena this past weekend, defeating Vermont 3-2 before suffering its first loss of the year, a 4-2 setback to 12/13th-ranked Providence. The Green and Gold began the 2019-20 campaign with a tie (1-1) and win (3-1) at Michigan on October 11-12.

• Clarkson won its 18th home opener in 29 years at Cheel Arena this past Friday with a 3-2 win over Vermont. Playing in his first home game at Cheel, Zach Tsekos, a transfer from Sacred Heart, made a big impression before the partisan crowd. The junior center scored all three goals against the Catamounts, becoming the first Knight to record a hat trick in almost two years since Sheldon Rempal put up three on November 3, 2017 in a 6-0 home win over RPI.
• The Knights suffered their first loss to Providence ever at Cheel on Saturday as the Friars held off the Green and Gold for a 4-2 victory, snapping a six-game losing streak in Potsdam. A Frozen Four participant last April, the Friars took a 2-1 first-period lead and then iced the game with a power-play tally with under five minutes to play after Clarkson had pulled to within one earlier in the third period. Freshman Anthony Romano and sophomore Josh Dunne, both scored on the power play.
• Tied for third on the Knights' scoring chart, Romano was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week. Along with his power-play goal against Providence, the right wing also recorded an assist in the win over Vermont. A 2019 NHL Draft pick of the Arizona Coyotes, Romano has two goals and three points through his first four college games.
• Tsekos and Dunne share the Green and Gold scoring lead with four points each. Tsekos has three goals and one assist, all coming this past weekend. With at least one point in three of the first four games, Dunne has tallied two goals and two assists.
• Junior Jack Jacome is Clarkson's leading playmaker with three assists.
• A graduate transfer from Robert Morris, Frank Marotte has seen all the action in the Clarkson crease to start the season. He posts a .942 save percentage and a 1.98 goals against average en route to a 2-1-1 record. Marotte has faced over 30 shots in every game. He has made 131 saves  (the sixth most in the NCAA).
• The Knights specialty teams were especially sharp this past weekend. Clarkson was 1-of-2 on the power play against Vermont and 2-of-3 against Providence (the Friars came into Saturday's game a perfect 12-of-12 on the penalty kill). The shorthanded units killed off all four of the Catamounts man-advantage opportunities and 2-of-3 Providence power plays.
• Overall through four games Clarkson is clicking at 30.8%, 4-13 on the power play (7th in the NCAA) and 89.5%, 17-19 on the penalty kill (18th).
• Clarkson is 4-9-1 all-time against Big10 opponents since the league was formed in 2013-14.  The Knights went 1-3 last year, defeating Wisconsin (4-2) in Potsdam and losing twice at Penn State (4-3, 5-1) and losing to Notre Dame (3-2 ot) in the NCAA Northeast Regional. The Green and Gold tied (1-1) and defeated Michigan (3-1) to start the 2019-20 campaign on October 11-12 at Michigan.
• Clarkson has gotten off to solid starts, netting the first goal in three of four games while outscoring the opponents 3-2 through the opening 20 minutes. The Knights have also been strong in the third period with a 5-3 goal differential. The Green and Gold have been outscored 3-1 in the middle frame.
• In its 98th season, Clarkson boasts 74 winning campaigns and a 1,464-874-163 all-time record for a .618 winning percentage since 1920-21.
• Left wing Devin Brosseau, a graduate student who was named ECAC Hockey's Student-Athlete of the Year in 2019, will serve as the Knights' captain for the second straight season. Acting as Clarkson assistant captains are senior defensemen Greg Moro and Jordan Schneider and sophomore center Josh Dunne.
• Four current Golden Knights have been selected in the NHL Draft. Junior Kris Oldham – 2015 by Tampa Bay (6th round, 153 overall), sophomore Nick Campoli – 2017 by Las Vegas (6th, 158), freshman Dustyn McFaul – 2018 by Boston (6th, 181) and freshman Anthony Romano – 2019 by Arizona (6th, 176).
• Several Clarkson alumni are playing in the NHL and AHL at the start of the 2019-20 professional season. Defenseman Mark Borowiecki '11 has played parts of the past eight seasons in the NHL with Ottawa and serves as a Senators Assistant Captain this year. The Knights' leading scorers from each of the past three seasons, who all left college for the pro ranks early, are starting the 2019-20 campaign in the AHL - Sam Vigneault '17 is with the Cleveland Monsters, Sheldon Rempal '18 is with the Ontario Reign and Nico Sturm '19 is with the Iowa Wild. Forwards Ben Sexton '14 and Jarrett Burton '14 are with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Rochester Americans, respectively. Defenseman James de Haas '17 plays with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Forward Josh Dickinson '18 is listed on the Colorado Eagles' roster. Jake Kielly '19, an all-star goaltender at Clarkson the previous three seasons, starts his pro career with the Kalamazoo Wings in the ECHL along with defenseman Aaron Thow '19.

Scouting Wisconsin
Boasting the most productive offense in the nation, Wisconsin comes into the weekend having won three straight for a 3-1 record. The Badgers, ranked 6th in the national polls, are scoring an average of 5.75 goals per game and have a power play that is clicking at almost 40% (7-18). Wisconsin opened a four-game home stand at the Kohl Center this past weekend with a convincing sweep of the defending national champions. The Badgers skated past Minnesota Duluth 6-2 on Friday and won 3-1 over the Bulldogs on Saturday. Wisconsin opened the year with a 5-3 loss at Boston College on October 11, but came back the next night with an overwhelming 11-5 win at Merrimack.
