Clarkson Hits 14 3-Pointers in 82-74 Win Over Vassar

Potsdam, NY – With momentum seemingly swinging in the opponent's direction, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team went on a 13-0 run midway through the second half to pick up an 82-74 victory over Vassar College on Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-9 overall and picked up their first conference win to move to 1-3 in the Liberty League. Vassar fell back below .500 at 5-6 overall and dropped to 1-3 in conference games. Clarkson takes on Bard College on Saturday afternoon.

Although the Golden Knights fell behind on the opening basket by Vassar in the early going, Clarkson would lead for the final 38-plus minutes of the contest, never allowing the Brewers to draw even for the rest of the game. Clarkson's first five baskets all came from beyond the 3-point arc, as the Knights edged out to a 15-9 lead in the first six minutes. Vassar pulled to within three on two occasions in the first half, but the Knights turned an otherwise close opening 20 minutes into a double-digit advantage by the break, making four more 3-pointers in the final three minutes. Roburt Welch buried two, Matt Higgins a hit a 3-pointer with 40 seconds to go, and Jason Phelps ended the half with a 3-pointer from the corner on a catch-and-shoot as time expired, giving the Knights a 48-33 lead.

Clarkson shot 11-for-22 in the first half, but was outrebounded 20-8. The Knights made up for the lack of boards by forcing the Brewers into 15 first-half turnovers while committing just four themselves.

Chris Hulbert hit a 3-pointer near the start of the second half to maintain the 15-point margin with 18 minutes remaining, but Vassar climbed back into the game with a 16-2 run over six minutes as the Knights' offense struggled. Up by just one point (53-52) after Chris Gallivan hit a 3-pointer from the wing for the Brewers, the Clarkson defense put on an impressive display, forcing the Brewers into eight turnovers as Clarkson went on its 13-0 run, putting the lead back to 14 points (66-52, 6:46 remaining). The Brewers got things rolling again on offense as Alex Seff found a groove late, but his 10 points in the final three minutes were not enough for Vassar's comeback effort.

Matt Higgins posted his second straight 20-point game, scoring 22 on 6-for-14 shooting, while Chris Hulbert quietly put together an 18-point effort by shooting 5-for-8 from the floor with three 3-point field goals. Jason Phelps buried a trio of 3-pointers for 10 points and Liam Ellis found his teammates along the perimeter frequently, earning eight assists.

For Vassar, Seff scored 17 points, 15 of which game in the second half. Paul Grinde added in 15 points and seven rebounds and Zach Bromfeld came off the bench for 10 points, shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor. Vassar owned a 38-22 advantage on the glass, but committed 25 turnovers to Clarkson's 11 miscues.
