Knights Fall to First Place Vassar, 77-48

Poughkeepsie, NY – Despite a strong start in the first quarter, the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team could not keep up with Vassar, as the Brewers kept the Golden Knights from an upset, 77-48, in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights dropped to 6-11 overall and 3-7 in the Liberty League, while the Brewers held on to first place in the conference, moving to 17-2 overall and 11-1 in league games.

Vassar shot 73.3% in the second quarter to change a five-point deficit into a 14-point halftime lead.

The Golden Knights opened the game with just a modest 6-for-14 shooting performance in the first 10 minutes, but what put the Brewers on their heels was the four 3-point field goals that the Green and Gold made in the quarter. Vassar led 9-8 late in the period, but Molly Stewart hit a short shot at 2:28 and then Raeanna Dunn and Carly Assimon buried 3-pointers to put Clarkson up 16-9. The Knights still led by five, 20-15, after a Hannah Earl layup at 6:58 in the second quarter, but Vassar responded with a 12-0 run, capped by a Ryan DeOrio layup at 3:52. Dani Douglas and DeOrio each then hit 3-pointers to expand the lead to double digits and Clarkson would never reduce the lead back to one digit numbers for the remainder of the contest.

In the middle of the third quarter, Molly Stewart hit 3-pointers to allow the Knights a gasp for a potential comeback, but Clarkson scored just two points for the rest of the period as Vassar slowly built its advantage to an unreachable level. In the fourth quarter, Vassar made sure no comeback would occur, shooting 7-for-9 from the field.

Stewart finished with 13 points to lead the Knights while Kati Gotch contributed seven points and eight rebounds. For Vassar, four players finished in double figures, led by Jackie Cenan's 14 points. Sophie Nick added a double-double on 13 points and 11 rebounds while Douglas and DeOrio chipped in 13 and 11 points, respectively.
