Knights Bury 15 3-Pointers in Blowout Win Over Vassar

Poughkeepsie, NY – Less than 24 hours after a rough shooting performance, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team rediscovered its collective shooting stroke against Vassar College, hitting 15 3-pointers in its 80-55 win on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights moved to 4-13 overall and 3-7 in the Liberty League, while Vassar dropped to 8-11 and 4-8. Clarkson is back to a stretch of five straight home games, beginning next Friday when the Knights host RIT.

Yesterday, Clarkson struggled mightily in a 24-point loss to Bard College and the Brewers decisively defeated first-place St. Lawrence by 21 points. So, of course, Clarkson cruised to its largest win of the season and seven different players hit at least one 3-pointer for the Knights.

The opening five minutes looked like a repeat of the performance against Bard as Clarkson mustered just two points in the first five minutes and just eight points in the first nine and a half minutes. A Matthew Hornak basket at 7:57 pulled Clarkson to within four, beginning a 27-8 run over the final eight minutes of the half. The run was sparked by shots from the perimeter, with Liam Ellis hitting at 5:15, Matt Higgins making a shot at 4:31 and Roburt Welch another 3-pointer at 3:47. Chris Hulbert then hit two 3-pointers in a stretch of only 30 seconds and Hornak closed out the half with a three-point play the old-fashioned way, hitting a layup and free throw on the final possession of the first 20 minutes.

The Knights saw their lead whittled down to five after a pair of free throws from Lance Tebay at 14:40, but Clarkson would get 3-pointers from Ellis and Jason Phelps to push the advantage back to double figures and would never be truly challenged again. Chris Gallivan hit a 3-pointer to pull Vassar to within 11 (59-48) only to see Clarkson rattle off 13 straight points in the next four minutes to expand the advantage to 24.

Clarkson shot a season-best 48.3% from the field and also posted its best 3-point field goal percentage (42.9%). Hornak finished with 17 points on 7-for-12 shooting while Ellis added 14 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. Matt Higgins tossed in 13 points in just 18 minutes and Welch scored 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting. Hulbert also scored 12 points to go along with a team-high eight rebounds. For Vassar, Mason Dyslin scored 11 points and Zach Bromfeld added 10 points and seven boards.
