Gomez Scores in 39th Minute and McDonald Earns 4th Shutout in Knights 1-0 Win Over RIT

Potsdam, NY – Tapping in a header with a flick of his own, Henry Gomez scored the game-winner late in the first half for the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team, lifting the Golden Knights to a 1-0 Liberty League victory over RIT on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 7-2-1 overall on the season and evened out their conference mark at 1-1-1. The Tigers dropped to 4-4-1 overall and remain winless in Liberty League contests at 0-3-0. Clarkson is back in action next weekend when it travels to take on league foe Hobart College.

Clarkson scored its first goal in more than 240 minutes of league play the team tallied in the 39th minute of the first half on Saturday. Freshman Nate Liscum sent in a cross on an indirect kick near the end line, finding the head of classmate Ben Root. That header might have crossed the goal line without any help, but Gomez made sure that no one on RIT could clear the ball finishing off a header with his momentum taking him into the net. The goal was Gomez's fifth of the season.

The Golden Knights had some chances late in the second half, but each of their shots ended up wide. Ben Root had a one-on-one with the goalie, but he took a misstep and couldn't get his full foot on his shot in the 71st minute. Six minutes later, Mack Walton's shot also went wide and with a little less than three minutes to go in the contest Erick Naula's attempt also was just off the mark. Most of RIT's chances in the final 45 minutes were harmlessly cleared away, but the Tigers did get put on shot on goal with about 10 minutes remaining that was halted by Clarkson goalkeeper Riley McDonald.

Clarkson had a narrow edge in shots (9-7) and the two teams were tied in corner kick chances (2-2). McDonald made four saves overall, with three coming in the first half, to record his fourth shutout in as many starts in 2018. Will Sokol stopped two shots in net for the Tigers.
