Clarkson Splits First Day of Volleyball Action at North Country Invitational

Potsdam, NY - It was certainly a tale of two matches for the Clarkson University Volleyball team on Friday evening at the North Country Invitational, as the Golden Knights cruised to a three-set win over Keuka (25-10, 25-12, 25-11) before getting nipped in the nightcap against Coast Guard in a five-set thriller (25-20, 19-25, 25-15, 21-25, 23-21) at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights will try to get back on the winning track on Saturday in their lone match against Marywood, beginning at 1:00 pm at Alumni Gymnasium.

Though it took some time to close things out in the last set, Clarkson had little trouble with Keuka in the opening match of the tournament, holding the Wolves to a total of 33 points in three sets. Rachel Reusch struck at a .714 rate with 10 kills on just 14 swings while Maddie Bredehoeft contributed a match-high 11 kills with a .417 percentage. Amanda Collins played the first two sets and produced 18 assists while Haley Aud matched her per-set rate with nine assists in the third set. Kate Isaksen picked up 14 digs and also contributed four assists. Gillian Kurtic was a force at the net with eight total blocks, including four solo efforts. Bredehoeft had an impressive all-around performance with 11 kills, 11 digs, and three aces.

For Keuka, Abby Anderson and Grace Allen each struck for six kills and Alyssa Rex had 12 assists. Emily Cottrell led the team with 13 digs.

In a match with more twists than the Pacific Coast Highway, it appeared as if Clarkson was going to win things in extra points in the fifth set, but Clarkson's hitter was called for being in the net on an attempted kill off an overpass and things went on. Eventually, the Bears outlasted the Golden Knights in five with a 23-21 win in set five.

The two teams combined for 180 digs in the match, with Coast Guard edging Clarkson by four in that category (92-88). However, it was Clarkson's Kate Isaksen that had the match-high in the category, collecting 29 digs, while teammate Kendall Cheval added 21 digs and 12 kills and Maddie Bredehoeft contributed 18 digs and 12 kills. Rachel Reusch led the Knights with 18 kills and a .412 hitting percentage and Amanda Collins produced 41 assists.

For Coast Guard, Angelou Dunton recorded 17 kills, 20 digs and 3 aces while Amanda Dake added 15 kills and 18 digs. MaKenna Martin ran the offense with 37 assists and nine digs and Nikki Sefcik added in 20 assists. Veronica Hine led the way defensively with 28 digs.
