Clarkson Offense Opens Up for 18 Goals in First Win Over Union

Schenectady, NY – Junior Jaid Baytos scored nine points, recording four goals and finding her teammates five times as well, as the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team won its first ever game against Union College, downing the Dutchwomen 18-10 in Liberty League play Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 11-5 overall and 5-4 in conference games, and will need to beat University of Rochester next Saturday to gain admittance to the Liberty League Tournament. Union dropped to 1-11 and 1-7 in league games.

Union entered the game allowing close to 14 goals per game, but Clarkson nearly blew past that number in the first half. Baytos and Aubrey Borgesi scored goals just 59 seconds apart about six minutes into the game to give the Knights a 4-2 lead, and Clarkson never looked back. The key in the first half was a stretch of four straight goals late in the period as Abby Collins, Baytos, Lexi Smith and Katie Sergeant each scored in a span of just 5:01. Emma Andrews also scored late in the half, but it was a Taylor Collins goal with just four seconds left that gave the Knights ample momentum heading into the locker room, as they were up 13-7 at the break.

Clarkson scored five of the first six goals in the second half as offense cooled, but Emma Andrews' tally at the 3:08 mark allowed the clock to run with a 10-goal lead for the Knights. That ceased a few moments later, but the Green and Gold had more than enough of a lead to cruise to the win.

Baytos tied her career-high with nine points and also added three draws. The score sheet was full for the Knights, as Emma Andrews scored four goals, Abby Collins added four points, four groundballs, four draws and three caused turnovers, and both Katie Sergeant (2-1-3) and Lexi Smith (3-0-3) added three points. Taylor Collins scored once, but contributed five groundballs, five draws and two caused turnovers to the Knights' effort.

Kellie Cronin led Union with three points, scoring twice and assisting on a third goal. Cailin Pandolfi also scored twice and Isabel Bush and Ramsey Walsh each produced two points on a goal and an assist. MK McIntyre led the team with five draw controls.
