CU Baseball Preview - at Vassar College (4/13-14)

Rain and snow in the forecast made this weekend's games between Vassar College and the Clarkson University Baseball team a questionable task for Jack Phillips Stadium, so the series was moved to Poughkeepsie for Friday and Saturday.

Live Stats

The Series: Clarkson has won four out of every five games against the Brewers dating back to Vassar's pre-Liberty League days. In more recent years, the Golden Knights are 8-1, losing just once during the four-game set in 2016. Clarkson and Vassar played only once in 2017, with the Golden Knights eliminating the Brewers in the Liberty League Tournament with an 11-1 victory in which sophomore Ernesto Ruiz-Sierra was 4-for-5 with three runs driven in and two more scored.

Key Stats for Clarkson (5-9, 0-4 Liberty League): Senior Will Coleman is pitching well so far in 2018, allowing only one walk against 15 strikeouts in 14 innings pitched this year, but he has an 0-2 record with a save to show for the effort thanks to getting matched up with other number one pitchers. The impressive strikeout-to-walk ratio is nothing new for Coleman, who led NCAA Division III in that category during (15.67). Junior Brad Pearson is slashing .407/.448/.537 to lead the team in most offensive categories, though classmate Vincent Granuzzo is pushing with .368/.386/.447 rates.

Key Stats for Vassar (10-7, 6-2 Liberty League): The Brewers are minimizing their mistakes this year, fielding an incredible .974 overall. The Brewers' pitchers therefore have some very true earned run averages. Max Spencer has an ERA of 1.05 in 25.2 innings of work, allowing hitters only a .482 OPS (.178/.282/.200) with just two extra-base hits (both doubles). Reliever Logan Williams has a 0.59 ERA in seven appearances, giving up just one earned run in 15.1 innings. Bobby Kinne is the team's top hitter, accounting for all of Vassar's four home runs with a .412/.483/.686 slash line. Kinne also has not struck out in 54 plate appearances.
