Clarkson Edged by Colgate 2-1 in Game 1 of Conference Quarterfinals

Clarkson University and Colgate, two of the top defensive teams in the nation faced off in Game 1 of ECAC Hockey quarterfinal series action at Cheel Arena on Friday with the Raiders prevailing 2-1 before 2,432 fans.

The Golden Knights, the No.3 seed in the league playoffs and the sixth-seeded Raiders will square again on Saturday in Game 2 of the best-of-three game series. If the Knights win, the teams will play again on Sunday in deciding Game 3. If Colgate wins on Saturday, the Raiders will advance to Lake Placid next weekend for the ECAC Hockey Championship Tournament.

Ranked 8/10th in the national polls, Clarkson owns a 20-9-6 overall record. Colgate stands at 17-15-6.

The Knights owned an overwhelming 32-14 shot advantage over Colgate, including a 14-1 margin in the third period, but could only get one attempt by the Raiders' all-star goaltender, Colton Point, a Top-10 Mike Richter Award Finalist.
 
Clarkson controlled play for most of the first period with an 11-6 advantage in shots. The Knights dominated the opening half of the stanza outshooting the Raiders 7-0 through the first seven minutes before the visitors registered their first shot on goal.
 
Colgate made the most of its opportunities in the middle frame to take a 2-0 lead through 40 minutes.
 
Adam Dauda put the Raiders on the scoreboard first, connecting on a power-play blast from the top of the circles that found its way through a screen in front of sophomore goaltender Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN) at 14:04. Colgate made it 2-0 with 2:04 remaining in the period when Jared Cockrell skated down the right wing and slipped in a shot from in front.
 
Junior Marly Quince (Sioux Lookout, ONT) made it a one-goal game at 9:51 of the third when he skated from behind the Raider's net and popped in a rebound off a shot by junior defenseman Aaron Thow (Toronto, ONT) for his fourth goal of the year.
 
Clarkson pulled Kielly for the extra attacker with 1:32 remaining, but could not get the equalizer despite several good opportunities.
 
Colgate scored on its only power play of the night and extended in penalty-killing streak to 20 straight by shutting down Clarkson on its two man-advantage opportunities.

Kielly, also a Top-10 Finalist for the Richter Award as best goaltender in the country, finished with 12 stops.
