Behind its most productive offensive outing in almost two months and another solid effort in goal by sophomore Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN), the Clarkson University Hockey team closed out a best-of-three game ECAC Hockey quarterfinal series by skating past Colgate 5-1 in Game 3 on Sunday night before 2,259 fans at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights, who shut out the Raiders 3-0 in Game 2, after losing the first game of the series 2-1 on Friday, improve to 22-9-6 and advance to the league's showcase event for the first time in 11 years since winning the 2007 Whitelaw Cup in Albany.

Clarkson will meet up with defending ECAC Hockey Tournament Champion Harvard in the semifinal round on Friday in Lake Placid. Cornell and Princeton will face off in the other semifinal game at at the1980 Rink – Herb Brooks Arena.

The Green and Gold received a balanced effort in the Game 3 victory as five different Knights scored goals against one of the top goaltenders in the country in Colgate's Colton Point. Ten Clarkson players recorded at least one point in the team's highest goal total since the 6-6 tie against Harvard on January 19.

Sophomore Sheldon Rempal (Calgary, ALB), the Knights' leading scorer, led the way with two goals and one assist. Kielly finished with 32 saves, including 15 over the final 20 minutes when the Green and Gold enjoyed a four-goal lead.

Colgate outshot the Knights 33-29, but Clarkson was better in specialty teams' play, going 1-of-4 on the power play while killing off all three of the Raiders' man-advantage chances.

A pair of goals 3:42 apart late in the first gave the Green and Gold the early momentum.

Clarkson's captain Nic Pierog (Georgetown, ONT) put the Knights on the scoreboard first. Shortly after a successful penalty kill on Colgate's first power play of the night, Pierog, stationed at the top of the crease, tapped in a pass from freshman Jack Jacome (Caledon, OT) at 13:14 for his fourth goal of the year. Rempal also assisted.

At 16:56, the Knights made it 2-0 on Jacome's seventh of the season, knocking in a rebound in front off a shot by freshman linemate Kevin Charyszyn (Jamison, PA). Junior defenseman Aaron Thow (Toronto, ONT) started the play with a pass out of the Clarkson zone to Charyszyn.

Clarkson's power play made it 3-0 early in the middle frame with a blast from the blueline by senior defenseman Terrance Amorosa (Kirkland, QUE), who connected on a one-timer off a pass from sophomore Nico Sturm (Augsburg, Germany) at 2:45. Rempal picked up his second assist of the night to start the scoring play.

Colgate came back with a goal by Adam Dauda at 4:58.

The Knights regained the three-goal margin at 12:28 on Rempal's team-high 22nd goal of the season, knocking in a shot from in tight. Sturm and senior defenseman Kelly Summers (Golden Lake, ONT) assisted.

Senior defenseman Tyko Karjalainen (Helsinki, Finland) closed out the scoring at 16:44 with a wrist shot from the right circle. Pierog and senior Dylan Gareau (Richmond, ONT) assisted.
