Knights Fall By One to Yale

A one-goal loss on Saturday to Yale halted the Clarkson University win streak at four games as the Bulldogs shut down the Green and Gold to gain a 2-1 victory before 2,543 fans at Cheel Arena.

Clarkson, which entered the weekend ranked 17th in the nation, stands at 8-5 overall and 2-2 in ECAC Hockey play. The Knights defeated Brown 5-1 on Friday.

The Knights close out play before the exam/holiday break with a home-and-home series against archrival St. Lawrence this coming weekend, playing in Canton on Friday and hosting the Saints on Saturday.

Yale (5-2-2, 4-2-1) controlled play through most of Saturday's game, outshooting the Green and Gold 38-20. The Bulldogs dominated the second period with a 19-3 advantage in shots and scored the game-winning goal in the middle frame.

For the first time this season, Clarkson trailed to start a game when Yale tallied the opening goal early in the first period. The Bulldogs Luke Stevens redirected a shot from the point by Jack St. Ivany to put the visitors on the scoreboard just 72 seconds after the opening faceoff.

The Knights responded late in the stanza on the power play to make it a 1-1 game after 20 minutes. Senior defenseman Aaron Thow (Toronto, ONT) picked off a Yale clearing attempt at the blueline, skated in and a fired a shot on goal. Bulldog goaltender Sam Tucker made the save, but could not control the rebound and junior Haralds Egle (Liepaia, Latvia) picked up the bouncing puck and knocked in his sixth goal of the year at 17:42.

Yale regained the lead midway through the second period with its own power-play tally with Dante Palecco, connecting on a shot from the inside edge of the right circle at 11:35 for the deciding goal.

The Knights mounted a challenge late in the third period, but it was too little, too late as they suffered their first loss at Cheel this season (6-1).

Yale was 1-of-2 on the power play, while Clarkson went 1-of-3.

Junior Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN) posted 36 saves
