Lucas Goes For 27 In Clarkson's 86-81 Overtime Win Over Bard

Potsdam, NY – On a night where his teammates were struggling mightily from the arc, freshman Joe Lucas came within one shot of tying the school mark for 3-pointers in a game, burying nine from the 3-point line to lead the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team to an 86-81 overtime victory over Bard College at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 7-10 overall and moved to 3-7 in the Liberty League, while Bard dropped to 6-11 and 4-6 in conference games. Clarkson will host Vassar on Saturday to close out its seven-game home stand, while the Raptors will head down Route 11 to face St. Lawrence.

Lucas unassumingly made three 3-pointers in the first half, but was virtually unstoppable from the perimeter in the second half, going 6-for-7 from the arc for a total of nine 3-pointers. Felix Llanos holds the Golden Knights' record with 10 3-pointers on November 19, 2011. Lucas finished with 27 points on 9-for-12 shooting, all from beyond the arc. Clarkson needed every one of Lucas's 3-pointers as the rest of the team struggled, shooting just 3-for-22.

The two teams went back and forth in the early going of the first half, with Bard holding a modest five-point advantage (16-11) before Clarkson rallied back to tie the game on multiple occasions. It wasn't until the final three and a half minutes that the Raptors took advantage of their own hot shooter, Emmanuel Oyakhilome. The sophomore forward started the game with 3-pointers from the corner, but expanded his range around the arc for two 3-pointers in the span of a minute, and he was followed by teammate Justyn Rogers' 3-pointer at the 2:01 mark to give Bard a 10-point advantage (38-28). Clarkson would score on its final possession to trim the deficit to eight at the break.

Down by 10 after the first possession of the second half, Clarkson came right back thanks to three straight 3-pointers from Lucas, giving Clarkson a 41-40 advantage at the 17:00 mark. For the rest of the game, it would be a shooting duel between Lucas and Oyakhilome, with a few others mixing in makes. Oyakhilome scored 11 straight points for the Raptors midway through the half to put Bard up by six (58-52), but a Lucas 3-pointer at the 8:03 mark returned the advantage to Clarkson at 60-58. Clarkson would hold on to a modest lead for virtually the remainder of the half, but the Knights went cold down the stretch while the Raptors chipped away, with a free throw from Justyn Rogers finally knotting the game up at 71-71 with only 40 seconds to go. The Raptors actually had a chance to win the game in regulation, but Oyakhilome's 3-pointer from the left corner rattled out in the final seconds, sending the game to overtime.

In the extra sessions, Clarkson was up three early, but Oyakhilome hit two more 3-pointers to give Bard a 78-77 lead at the 2:24 mark. That was the last time that Bard would score a basket, however, and Matthew Hornak hit a clutch 3-pointer from the wing with 2:02 remaining to put the Knights up for good. Matt Higgins was able to get good looks on the interior, and he and Liam Ellis knocked down free throws in the waning moments to clinch the win for the Knights.

Lucas scored 27 points on 9-for-12 shooting to lead Clarkson, while Matt Higgins added 21 points and eight rebounds for the Knights. Liam Ellis had a double-double on 12 points and 10 assists and teammate Gary Hanley had a double-double of a different variety thanks to 10 points and 17 rebounds. For Bard, Emmanuel Oyakhilome scored a career-high 28 points on 9-for-21 shooting, including eight makes from beyond the arc. Justyn Rogers and David Runcie also reached double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Bard made 15 3-pointers in the game, easily surpassing its previous season-high of 12 against St. Lawrence. However, the Raptors also attempted 43 shots from beyond the arc, 13 more than they had in any other game this season.
