CU Volleyball Preview - North Country Invitational (9/8-9)

The opening tournament of 2017 for the Clarkson University Volleyball team was 2700 miles across the country, but the court for tournament number two will only be 50 feet from the Golden Knights locker room as the Green and Gold will co-host the North Country Invitational with SUNY Potsdam this weekend.

The Golden Knights will take on three opponents at Alumni Gymnasium, all New York Region foes in Keuka College, Fredonia State and SUNY Potsdam.

The Series (vs. Keuka): The Golden Knights are just one game over .500 against the Wolves in the all-time series (10-9), but they've won four straight with their last loss coming in 2002 back when sets went to 30 in regulation. Clarkson swept Keuka in three straight sets back in 2014.

The Series (vs. Fredonia State): Clarkson is just one game over .500 against the Blue Devils, as well, with a mark of 4-3. The Knights won three straight meetings in this decade, winning nine sets and losing just two from 2010-2012. Fredonia last won back in 2008.

The Series (vs. SUNY Potsdam): The Bears own a 15-game edge in the all-time series (56-41), but Clarkson has owned SUNY Potsdam for the last 10 years with 19 straight wins, including a four-set victory in 2016. The Bears last came away with a victory in mid-2006.

Key Stats for Clarkson: First and foremost, senior Rachael Aird needs just 17 more kills to become the 11th member of the 1000-kill club at Clarkson, becoming a rare middle hitter in the group. Sophomore Rachel Reusch leads the Liberty League with a .342 hitting percentage and classmate Kate Isaksen has an impressive 8.40 digs per set in the early going. Isaksen ranked 13th nationally in that category in 2016.

Key Stats for Keuka: The Wolves won just once in their season-opening tournament (1-3). Through four matches, Keuka has already posted 36 service aces, but they've also been the victim of 37 aces on the defensive end. The Wolves also have just eight total blocks so far, 1.5 less than Clarkson's Rachel Reusch has accumulated.

Key Stats for Fredonia State: Another team with a strong presence on the service line, the Blue Devils (2-3) have compiled 54 service aces (2.57 per set) through their first five matches, but it's a delicate balance of aggressiveness for Fredonia, which has also committed 59 service errors (2.81 per set). Kristen Stanek leads the team with 4.33 kills per set.

Key Stats for SUNY Potsdam: The Bears have won two of their first three matches, largely on the hitting of Kelsey Tompkins. The senior outside hitter was named the SUNYAC Player of the Week for good reason, with 41 kills and a .452 hitting percentage. However, the rest of the team was lackluster in the first three matches, combining to hit just .098 (88-56-325).
