Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse | | April 8, 2017

Late Goal from Vassar Ends Knights Comeback Hopes

Potsdam, NY – After trailing for almost the entire 60 minutes, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team finally tied things up with just 22 seconds left, but that momentum shift was brief as Vassar scored with just four seconds left to claim a 10-9 Liberty League victory over the Golden Knights on Saturday at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in the Liberty League, while Vassar improved to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in conference games.

Just 30 seconds into the contest Sam Houston-Read was able to slip a shot past Clarkson goalkeeper Nick Strandholm to give the Brewers a 1-0 lead. While the Brewers were never able to pull away, they maintained a modest advantage throughout the game. In the first quarter, Vassar scored three times in the first six and a half minutes, continuing Clarkson's scoreless trend that began last weekend at Union. At the 6:37 mark of the first, sophomore Shane Kilday ended a 45-minute, 38-second scoreless drought for the Knights, providing some relief for the offense. Though the Knights wouldn't score again until the beginning of the second quarter, they did tally three times to pull back within a single goal at the half, 5-4. Clarkson was excellent on special teams on Saturday, scoring three times with a man-up and once a man-down, with one of each coming in the final four minutes of the second quarter.

Vassar returned its lead to three goals when Michael Mullen and Brandon DeStasio tallied in the third quarter, but the Knights responded with a goal near the end of the third (Conor Bartlett) and one at the start of the fourth (Ryan St. Croix) to make it 7-6. For the next 12 minutes of the quarter, the two teams would trade goals, including a Ryan DaRin goal with 2:22 remaining to make the score 9-8. St. Croix then ripped a shot through to tie the game 9-9 with just 22 seconds left in the contest. Vassar won the ensuing faceoff and called timeout to set things up, and the actions worked as Liam Moriarty found Michael Mullen with four seconds remaining to push the Brewers back in front. Clarkson won the following faceoff at midfield, but didn't have enough time remaining to record the tying goal.

Clarkson finished with an edge in shots (42-36), groundballs (21-20) and faceoffs (14-9).  Ryan St. Croix scored four points on two goals and two assists, while Shane Kilday (3-0) and Ryan DaRin (2-1) each added three points. Ryan Gabriel won 14 of his 23 faceoffs and scooped up five groundballs, and Mark Uhlig also added four groundballs. In the Clarkson crease, Strandholm finished with 15 saves.

For Vassar, Chris Billups and Brandon DeStasio each scored three goals and Michael Mullen added two goals and an assist. James Thomas had two points with a goal and an assist and Liam Moriarty recorded a pair of assists. Eric Prezioso was active defensively with five groundballs and four caused turnovers. Matthew Boyd made 13 saves for the Brewers.
