Clarkson Hits The Road for Four Game Set at RPI

With a strong start to the conference schedule, the Clarkson University Baseball team will travel to RPI for a four game series this weekend with a chance to go to the top of the standings.

Clarkson is 7-7 overall and 4-2 in the Liberty League. The Golden Knights' success in conference can be traced to the strong pitching performances. Overall, Clarkson has an ERA of 5.59, but that number drops to 3.80 against conference opponents, the second best mark in the league. Clarkson is coming off 14 shutout innings against Skidmore, with the Green and Gold taking 8-0 and 2-0 wins. Ted Wilson continued to lead the way for the Clarkson pitching staff as he threw five shutout innings, lowering his earned run average to 1.96 and getting his third victory of the season. Wilson is the first Liberty League pitchers to three wins and is fifth in the conference in ERA and innings pitched (23.0). Mike Bubniak started the second game against Skidmore and he threw six scoreless innings to get his second win of the season and lower his ERA to 3.86. Ryan Riley and Nate Burns also appeared in Wednesday's games against Skidmore. Riley pitched two scoreless innings to close out the 8-0 win, while Burns threw a scoreless ninth in the 2-0 to pick up his second save of the season.

On offense, Clarkson used a home run to separate itself from Skidmore in both wins. Brad Pearson launched one in the 8-0 win and then Joe Fraser's home run in the second game proved to be the winning run. The pair are the third and fourth Clarkson players to hit a home run this season, as Justin Judson has one as well while Dom Pirro leads the team with two. Pirro also leads the team in batting average (.404), on-base percentage (.483), and slugging percentage (.615). He is tenth in the first two categories in the Liberty League and sixth in slugging. Although he only has 12 at-bats, Mike Messier has hit well in those chances as he has a .500 batting average. Everyone has contributed to knocking in runs as 12 different hitters have multiple RBI's. Pirro leads the way with nine. Just behind him is Chris Miller and Pearson who each have seven, with Miller leading the team in doubles as he has four. Cam Bando is fourth as he has knocked in six runs and has a team-high two triples.

RPI has an 8-12 overall record and is 3-3 in conference. The Engineers started the conference slate with three straight losses to RIT, but taking the final game against RIT gave them momentum which carried over to a doubleheader sweep against St. Lawrence. Sam Lawrence and Ethann Meister lead RPI with 25 and 22 hits respectively. Lawrence also has a Liberty League high four home runs to go with six doubles. Aaron Kalish and Patrick McMackin have thrown 27.0 and 25.2 innings each, but Christopher Palmiero might be the best pitcher for RPI as he has a 2.33 ERA in 19.1 innings pitched.

Clarkson and RPI have met in the past two Liberty League playoffs, and neither ended well for Clarkson. A 10-3 win in 2015 and 12-6 victory in 2016 for RPI ended Clarkson's season on both occasions. In the regular season, Clarkson has been more successful against RPI with a 3-2 record in the same span.

The two teams will start with two games on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm. The two teams will meet again for two games on Sunday starting at 12:00 noon.
