Knights Split Doubleheader Versus Plattsburgh

Potsdam, NY – Tuesday's doubleheader between the Clarkson University Softball team and Plattsburgh State could not have had two more polar opposite outcomes as the Golden Knights came away with a crisp 2-0 win in the opener but suffered an 11-9 defeat in game two at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 16-12 on the season and will return to league play this weekend when they face St. Lawrence on Sunday. Plattsburgh State saw its record go to 18-14.

In the opener, Clarkson's Jamie Bridge and Plattsburgh's Katie Pitkin matched zeroes for the first four innings as the two teams cruised through half the game in a little over 45 minutes. The Knights finally broke through in the fifth when Summer Lancette started a rally with a one-out walk. Raeanna Dunn singled to left and Jamie Bridge followed with a single up the middle, scoring Lancette and advancing Dunn to third. Michele Winn then grounded out softly to second, allowing Dunn plenty of time to score the second run of the game.

Bridge started the game perfect through four innings before wiggling out of a first-and-third situation with no outs in the fifth. Once Clarkson got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning, Bridge retired the hitters in order in the sixth and in the seventh finished off the game with a strikeout despite having the tying run on base. She finished with her second straight three-hitter, allowing only one walk in seven frames while striking out eight.

Game two was all about big innings, though neither team did much other than let the other squad make mistakes. Plattsburgh picked up a run in the first, but neither team scored again for another three innings. Clarkson then put up and eight-spot in the bottom of the fourth, despite getting just two hits in the inning. The merry-go round started with three walks and two hit by pitches to give Clarkson a quick 2-1 edge and Lancette drew a bases-loaded walk to put Clarkson up 3-1. Dunn followed with an infield single to score another run and Bridge singled up the middle to plate two more runs. After a strikeout, a muffed pop up allowed two more to come around to put Clarkson up 8-1.

The Knights nearly ended the game in the bottom of the fifth with runners on first and second with just one out, but they couldn't squeeze the mercy run across. That would come back to haunt the Knights as Plattsburgh scored two on a Haleigh Agans home run in the sixth. The Cardinals would take full advantage of Clarkson's miscues in the seventh, sending five runners in to tie the game at 8-8. In extra innings, each team scored a run in the eighth, but Plattsburgh pushed two across in the ninth and held the Knights scoreless in the bottom half of the inning.

Katie Pelton took the loss for Clarkson, pitching the first two innings of the game and then coming back on in relief for the final two extra-inning frames. Taylor Smith gained the win for the Cardinals, tossing six strong relief innings with six strikeouts and just one walk.
