Trio in Double Figures to Give Knights 75-59 Win Over RIT

Rochester, NY – With eight straight free throws in the final two minutes, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team turned a close game into a double-digit victory, claiming a 75-59 victory over RIT in Liberty League action Friday night.

The Golden Knights improved to 11-9 overall and 6-5 in the Liberty League, while RIT fell to 12-9 overall and 6-6 in conference games. It was a big win for Clarkson, as the Golden Knights were able to pick up the season sweep and number-one overall tie-breaking procedure in case the two teams end up tied at the end of the conference season.

In the early going it didn't look like Clarkson was going to be sweeping anything as the Knights mustered just a single basket in the first four-plus minutes of the contest and trailed 9-2. However, Clarkson found a groove offensively thanks to senior forward Derek Hart, and the two teams were tied up four times in the next four minutes. RIT edged back out in front after a 3-pointer and later a layup from Troy Pierre-Louis, giving the Tigers a modest three-point edge (24-21). The Knights then scored the next eight points and would never trail again. Two free throws from Liam Ellis with 35 seconds left gave Clarkson an eight-point lead, and the Knights would finish out the half up by six.

At the start of the second, RIT climbed back to within four on two occasions, but Clarkson always had enough on offense to keep the Tigers at bay. Though the Knights pushed their advantage to 16 points midway through the half (59-43), RIT scored 11 straight, with the final two points coming on an AJ Horde lay in at the 6:17 mark, to cut the deficit to five points. Still, Clarkson was able to keep RIT at a safe distance, holding a nine-point edge with a little over two minutes to go. Hart scored at the 1:59 mark to push the Knights back up by double-figures, and the Tigers were unable to make a shot for the next minute while Clarkson pulled away with an 8-for-8 performance from the free throw line, including six straight from Malaquias Canery. That dry spell was enough to end the game largely in Clarkson's favor.

Hart finished with another impressive performance, shooting 12-for-16 from the floor for 25 points to go along with 12 boards and three blocks. Drew Zlogar chipped in 17 points and 12 boards and Canery added 16 points and five assists. For RIT, Troy Pierre-Louis had a team-best 16 points while Robert Aguilera added 15 points, five rebounds and three blocks. AJ Horde was next on the scoring list for RIT with six points, but no other RIT player mustered more than four tallies. The Tigers shot just 1-for-16 from beyond the 3-point arc and only 9-for-31 in the second half, while Clarkson went 14-for-29 from the field in the final 20 minutes.
