Hart Sets Mark, But Knights Fall at Skidmore, 93-78

Saratoga Springs, NY – Seventy percent from the floor and nine 3-pointers in the second half were too much to overcome for the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team as Skidmore tossed in 59 second-half points to defeat the Golden Knights 93-78 on Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights finished off their 2016-17 season with a record of 12-13 overall and 7-9 in the Liberty League, while Skidmore polished off its regular season with a record of 19-6 overall and 14-2 in the conference.

Though the day and season ended with a loss, senior Derek Hart concluded his outstanding season in style with 26 points. He won the Liberty League scoring title at 22.2 points per game, the highest figure since the conference rebranded in 2004-05. Hart also pushed his season points total to 554, surpassing a 58-year-old record at Clarkson set by Bob Shepard (551 points) in 1958-59. Hart became the second player to win the Liberty League scoring title in the last six seasons, joining Felix Llanos, who won the title with an average of 19.3 ppg in 2011-12.

In the early going, it appeared as if Clarkson would end the season on a positive note with a win over the conference's regular-season champion. The Knights jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first four minutes, capped off by a Michael Hayduk 3-pointer. Skidmore got things rolling on offense, but still found themselves down by nine points 11 minutes later when Drew Zlogar hit another 3-pointer for the Knights. Clarkson edged out by as many as 10 points late in the first half, but free throws in the waning seconds allowed Skidmore to cut into the deficit and reduce it to just seven at the break.

When the second half started, Skidmore could not miss, shooting 21-for-30 from the field with nine 3-pointers in the 20-minute stretch. Specifically, Edvinas Rupkus was on fire, making five of his six 3-point field goals and eight of his 10 shots from the floor overall, scoring 26 points. Chase Ta gave Skidmore its first lead three minutes into the second half and Clarkson did come back to tie the game on a couple of occasions. However, Rupkus and the Thoroughbreds kept running and gunning, scoring 38 points in the last 13 minutes. Skidmore went on a 13-2 run in less than four minutes to take a double-digit lead, and another 11-1 run allowed the Thoroughbreds to push the advantage to 18 with a little under six minutes to go. From there, Skidmore kept converting and keeping the Knights at a safe distance to win its 14th conference game.

Hart finished with 26 points, shooting 9-for-15 from the field, to lead the Golden Knights. Liam Ellis and Drew Zlogar each scored 15 points and grabbed six rounds apiece for Clarkson. On Skidmore's side, Rupkus finished with 30 points on 9-for-12 shooting while Aldin Medujnanin added 21 points, nine boards and five assists. Jack Morrow also chipped in 13 points for the Thoroughbreds.
