Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Clarkson Downs RPI 2-0 in Opening Round of Friendship Four

The timely scoring of freshman Josh Dickinson (Georgetown, ONT), the steady goaltending of sophomore Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN) and solid specialty teams play proved to be the winning formula once again for the Clarkson University Hockey Team. The Golden Knights received both goals from Dickinson and Kielly posted 22 saves as the Green and Gold opened play in Northern Ireland with a 2-0 non-league victory over RPI in the first round of the Friendship Four at Belfast's SSE Arena.

Ranked 5th in the NCAA national polls, Clarkson will play 10th-ranked Providence in the Friendship Four Championship game on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. EST.

The Knights have won seven straight to improve their overall record to 11-3-1.

Clarkson dominated play against the Engineers on the big ice surface at SSE Arena, but could not put RPI (2-8-3) away until late in the contest.

Dickinson scored his second goal of the night and his ninth over the last seven games to give the Green and Gold some breathing room with under three minutes to play. Dickinson took a pass off the boards from classmate Jack Jacome (Caledon, ONT), skated down the right wing and then cut across the slot where he slipped in his ninth goal of the season at 17:28. Freshman Kevin Charyszyn (Jamison, PA) also assisted.

Dickinson opened the scoring late in the first period. With one second left in the first power-play of the game, Dickinson took a pass at the top of the crease from Charyszyn and knocked in the only goal Clarkson would need at 18:10. Sophomore Haralds Egle (Liepaia, Latvia) also assisted.

The Knights outshot RPI 34-22, but the Engineers made a late push in the third to hold a 13-9 shot advantage in that period.

Kielly posted 22 saves to record his second straight shutout and NCAA-leading fifth whitewash of the year.

Clarkson was 1-of-5 on the power play and killed off RPI's three man-advantage opportunities.
