Knights Fall in Four Versus Bombers

Potsdam, NY – A come from behind win in the first set made it appear as if the Clarkson University Volleyball team would be able to use some momentum at home against Ithaca, but the Bombers won the next three sets to defeat the Golden Knights in four sets 19-25, 25-15, 25-16, 25-19 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights suffered their first loss in league and fell to 4-1 in the Liberty League and 10-7 overall. Ithaca kept itself alive for potential conference hosting rights with the win, moving to 11-5 overall and 3-1 in the league. Clarkson heads to Pennsylvania next weekend for three matches before returning home to close out the conference slate.

Things started out in Ithaca's favor, with the Bombers winning 13 of the first 20 points, but Clarkson slowly started chipping away at the deficit and pulled to within one at 15-14. A few points later Ithaca was up by three (18-15), but the Knights watched the Bombers make five errors and surrounded those points with enough kills of their own to gain a first set win (25-19).

In the following three sets, Ithaca did a good job of reducing its errors and the accompanying offense was too much for the Knights to overcome. Freshman Reagan Stone was especially difficult to stop for the Knights, as she scored eight kills on just 14 attacks in the second and third set, helping Ithaca to hit .462 and .366 in those sets, respectively. In the fourth, Clarkson's errors started to accumulate and the Knights hit just .051 (10-8-39), which wasn't enough to overcome the 15-4-40 line produced by the Bombers.

Both Kendall Cheval and Rachel Reusch each recorded eight kills to lead the Knights, while Maddie Bredehoeft and Rachael Aird added seven kills. Aird also delivered a pair of solo blocks, and Jillian Saenz produced 26 assists and two aces. Kate Isaksen led the defense with 13 digs.

For Ithaca, Reagan Stone hit .485 with 18 kills and just a pair of errors to lead the Bombers offense. Joelle Goldstein produced a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs and both Amanda Cerruti and Katie Evans chipped in 11 kills. Tara Stilwell recorded 18 digs and Caitlyn Floyd ran the offense to the tune of 53 assists.
