Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | October 28, 2017

Knights Sweep NY Regional Challenge

Rochester, NY – With three more victories at the New York Regional Challenge this weekend, the Clarkson University Volleyball team has pushed its winning streak to eight straight thanks to wins over Buffalo State (25-21, 25-20, 25-23), Cortland State (25-21, 13-25, 25-19, 25-16) and the University of Rochester (25-12, 25-13, 22-25, 25-17).

The Golden Knights moved to 19-7 overall and will compete in the Liberty League playoffs for the sixth straight season. Clarkson faces Vassar College in the first round on Friday, looking for its sixth straight conference crown.

Though Buffalo State has just six wins on the season, the Bengals made things difficult for Clarkson on Friday night despite the sweep. In each set, Buffalo State kept the margin minute, reaching 20 or more points in all three sets to make the Knights sweat things out. Sophomore libero Kate Isaksen was particularly impressive with 30 digs. On the attack, Kendall Cheval contributed a team-best 11 kills, while both Rachael Aird and Savannah Peters added in eight kills. Rachel Reusch also had seven kills and a pair of blocks, while Jillian Saenz tossed in 28 assists and a pair of aces. Meghan Edmund also had two aces to go along with her 11 digs.

The Knights suffered through a lopsided score in the second set against Cortland State, but made up for the hiccup with two solid victories in the final two sets to claim the four-set win. Rachael Aird was dominant in the victory, hitting .545 (13-1-22), while Rachel Reusch nearly matched Aird with 10 kills to go along with four blocks, including three solo efforts. Maddie Bredehoeft was Clarkson's top outside threat with six kills and just on error in 13 swings. Jillian Saenz was solid in running the offense with 31 assists and also produced 10 digs. Kate Isaksen again led the defense with 33 digs from the back row.

Though Clarkson was called upon to compete immediately after their four-set match against Cortland, the Golden Knights nearly dispatched Rochester in straight sets before settling for a second straight four-set victory. Clarkson hit .274 in the match thanks to 17 kills from Aird, 13 kills from Reusch, 11 kills from Cheval, and 8 more kills from Peters. Cheval also produced 16 digs while Aird and Peters recorded four and three blocks, respectively. Meghan Edmund matched Cheval's dig total with 16 and also produced a pair of aces. Jillian Saenz had her second straight double-double with 45 assists and 12 digs, as well as two aces, and Kate Isaksen tallied 24 more digs and a pair of aces herself.
