Knights Gain Pair of Five-Set Wins in Pennsylvania

Allentown, PA – Twice it took five sets for the Clarkson University Volleyball team to come away with a victory, but the Golden Knights nevertheless concluded their weekend with a perfect 3-0 record thanks to wins over Gettysburg College and Muhlenberg College on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights opened the day by dropping the first two sets, but roared back to win against the Bullets 22-25, 23-25, 25-20 25-19, 15-10. Following that victory, Clarkson won the first two sets against host Muhlenberg, then dropped two before nearly doubling up the Mules in the fifth set, winning 25-23, 25-23, 18-25, 24-26, 15-8. Clarkson improved to 13-7 on the season, while Gettysburg fell to 18-5 to and Muhlenberg dropped to 20-4.

In the opening two sets against the Bullets, Clarkson was tied late (22-22 in the first, 23-23 in the second), but couldn't find enough to come away with any wins. The Knights broke through in the third, slowly increasing their modest lead to as many as nine late (23-14). Gettysburg rallied with four straight points in the later points, but Gillian Kurtic drove down a kill to end the third, 25-20.

The fourth set saw the two teams tie up 10 different times in the first 26 points before Gettysburg ran off three straight to take a 16-13 lead. Still up by three, the Bullets watched Clarkson go on a run of its own, as the Knights scored eight straight to take a 22-17 lead, with a lot of the damage coming on miscues by the Bullets. In the final points, Rachel Reusch delivered a pair of kills to give Clarkson a 25-19 win.

Set number five began with Gettysburg winning four of the first six points, but it was Clarkson that was first to eight (and nine) as it scored seven straight. Gettysburg would pull back to within three twice, but a kills by Reusch and Gillian Kurtic, as well as block assists from the duo, ended the match.

The Golden Knights received solid offensive contributions from several different sources, including an impressive effort from sophomore Rachel Reusch, who delivered 17 kills with just one error in 42 swings (.381 hitting percentage) to go along with a career-high 28 digs. Rachael Aird added in 12 kills and also had six service aces and four total blocks, while freshman Gillian Kurtic posted the best numbers of her young collegiate career with 12 kills and three errors on 22 swings for a .409 hitting rate. Jillian Saenz and Amanda Collins split setting duties with 35 and 19, respectively, and Kate Isaksen added in 39 digs and six assists of her own.

In the first set against Muhlenberg, Clarkson found itself trailing for the latter half of the game, but down by three (23-20), Clarkson rattled off five straight thanks to three kills, an unforced attack error and block assists from Maddie Bredehoeft and Kurtic. Set number two saw Clarkson tie the score at 9-9 and the Knights never trailed again, winning again 25-23. With momentum and luck on their side, it appeared as if Clarkson would come away with a sweep, but Muhlenberg struck for 30 kills against just nine errors in the next two sets to even the match up at 2-2. That offense evaporated for the Mules in set number three as Muhlenberg couldn't put many points down, finishing with only four kills. Clarkson, on the other hand, crushed nine in the 15-point stretch, including one from middle Rachael Aird to force a match point. Kate Isaksen ended the game and the match with an ace and Clarkson was able to hold on for its second win of the day and third of the weekend.

Rachel Reusch again had a big match for the Knights, striking for 19 kills and 10 digs, while Maddie Bredehoeft also made it into double digits with 10 kills. Rachael Aird added eight kills, five aces and four blocks, and Kendall Cheval contributed eight kills and 18 digs. Amanda Collins recorded a double-double with 47 assists and 15 digs and Kate Isaksen averaged better than seven digs per set, finishing with 37.
