15th-Ranked Clarkson Heads To Western Michigan for Weekend Series

The season-opening weekend could not have gone much better for the Clarkson University Hockey team as the Golden Knights swept Penn State and the University of Michigan at Cheel Arena to get the 2017-18 campaign off to an impressive start.

Clarkson, guided by seventh-year head coach Casey Jones and assistants Phil Roy '00 and Josh Hauge, will now take to the road for a weekend series out in the Midwest, facing off at Western Michigan in Kalamazoo, MI on Friday at 7:05 p.m. and on Saturday at 8:05 p.m.

Coming off their first wins ever over Big 10 programs the Green and Gold will look to continue the play that led to their first back-to-back non-league victories since late November 2015. Sophomore goaltender Jake Kielly was stellar in the Golden Knights' crease with a 38-save effort in Friday's 2-1 win over 10th-ranked Penn State. Junior Marly Quince and senior defenseman Kelly Summers provided the goals as Clarkson never trailed in the contest. Kielly made 29 more stops on Saturday in shutting out Michigan 3-0 in the Wolverines' first visit to Potsdam in nearly 60 years. Seniors Dylan Gareau, Terrance Amorosa and Nic Pierog supplied the goals.

USCHO.com Poll
USA Today Poll

• Clarkson is unbeaten in its last four games against Western Michigan, including three straight wins to take an 8-2-2 lead in the all-time series. In their last meetings, the Knights swept the Broncos at Cheel Arena, winning 4-2 and 6-2 on October 23-24, 2015. Western Michigan's last win in the series was an 8-4 triumph in Potsdam on November 4, 1994. Clarkson is 2-1-1 in Kalamazoo, but lost its last game at Lawson Arena, falling 4-3 on November 6, 1993. Marly Quince is the only current Knight to have recorded a goal in the series. Kelly Summers has a team-high two points against the Broncos with a pair of assists.
• Clarkson is ranked 15th in both the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Magazine National polls.
• The Knights next six games are all against teams that competed in the 2017 NCAA Tournament.
• Clarkson displayed its offensive balance in the opening weekend as five different players accounted for the goals and eight Knights recorded at least one point.
• Terrance Amorosa was named ECAC Hockey Player of the Week. The senior defenseman leads Clarkson on the scoring charts through the first two games with four points on one goal and three assists. He tallied two points in each win over the weekend, including the Knights' first power-play goal of the season in the win over Michigan. The 2013 NHL Draft choice of the Philadelphia Flyers was also strong on the blueline, finishing with a +3 plus/minus rating.
• Named ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week, Jake Kielly was nearly unbeatable over the weekend, stopping 67 of 68 shots in the sweep of Penn State and Michigan. He made 38 saves in the one-goal victory over the Nittany Lions, allowing only a power-play tally, and then posted his fourth career shutout turning aside all 29 Michigan shots in Saturday's 3-0 win. Selected as the goaltender on the ECAC Hockey All-Rookie team last year, Kielly owns a .985 save percentage and a 0.50 goals against average. He was also honored as NCAA Ice Hockey 2nd Star of the Week.
• Marly Quince, who was a top forward for the Green and Gold in postseason play last March, wasted little time in starting the 2017-18 campaign off on the right note, scoring just seconds into the season-opener. His goal at 14 seconds in the win over Penn State was the 11th fastest goal to start a game for Clarkson. Quince followed on Saturday, setting up two goals in the victory over the Wolverines. His three points this season have already surpassed the two points (1-1) that he recorded in eight games last year.
• Dylan Gareau, who has battled through injuries that past three seasons, got off to a fast start to his senior campaign, scoring the winning goal in Saturday's victory over Michigan. It was his first goal since February 12, 2016.
• Connor McCarthy became the first Clarkson freshman to record a point this season. The tallest player on the Knights' roster as a 6-7 defenseman, McCarthy, playing in his first collegiate game, helped to set up the game-winning goal against Michigan on Saturday.
• Captain Nic Pierog is the first Golden Knight to wear the #6 jersey since the late Mike Morrison '89 wore it in his senior campaign of 1998-89. Pierog scored the key third goal  against Michigan, shutting down an attempted rally by the Wolverines.
• Senior defenseman Kelly Summers scored the game-winning goal against Penn State and recorded an assist in the victory over Michigan.
• Sophomore right wing Sheldon Rempal also collected a point in each game over the weekend with an assist in both victories.
• Clarkson Head Coach Casey Jones is two wins shy of the century mark for coaching victories at Clarkson. In his seventh season, he has accumulated 98 career wins since 2011-12.
• Clarkson is 4-0 all-time against National College Hockey Conference competition. In 2013-14, the Knights swept Colorado College (2-1, 1-0ot) at Cheel Arena in the first year of the conference, and then swept Western Michigan (4-2, 6-2) in Potsdam during the 2015-16 campaign.
• In its 96th season, Clarkson boasts 72 winning campaigns and a 1,415-851-154 all-time record for a .617 winning % since 1920-21.

Scouting Western Michigan
Western Michigan is another one of the teams that played in last year's NCAA Tournament that the Knights will be facing early in schedule. The Broncos, guided by head coach Andy Murray, posted a 22-13-5 overall record in 2016-17 and placed third in the National College Hockey Conference. Much like Clarkson, Western Michigan lost its top scorers from last year and has brought in a large freshman class. The Broncos split a season-opening series with in-state rival Ferris State over the weekend, defeating the Bulldogs 6-1 in Kalamazoo before falling 3-2 in Big Rapids, MI on Saturday. On Tuesday, Western Michigan skated past Bowling Green 3-1 at Lawson Arena.
