Clarkson Hockey Faces RPI in Lake Placid Non-League Action

With three straight losses to close out the 2016 portion of the schedule, the Clarkson University Hockey team is anxious to start the New Year off on the right note. 2017 could not come fast enough for the Golden Knights, who suffered their worst loss in almost six years in their last outing. For only the second time this season, Clarkson suffered a loss on the road and it came in a bad way as the Green and Gold were out skated by Northeastern 8-2 in Boston this past Friday.

Guided by sixth-year head coach Casey Jones, and assistants Phil Roy '00 and Josh Hauge, Clarkson stands one game above the .500 mark at 9-8-3 overall. The Knights finish up out-of-conference action on Saturday when they battle ECAC Hockey rival Rensselaer in a non-league game in Lake Placid. Faceoff is 7:00 p.m. at the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena.

• In a heated rivalry which dates back to the 1924-25 campaign, Clarkson leads the overall series against Rensselaer 89-50-11, and is 2-0-1 in the last three meetings, including wins in the past two.  The Knights scored three, third-period goals to knock off RPI 5-2 in Troy on November 11. 
• Since 1980, Clarkson is 14-12 on the Olympic ice (200'x100') in Lake Placid and posted an 8-9 mark in the ECAC Tournament when it was held in Lake Placid for 10 years from 1993-2002. The Knights' last game in Lake Placid was a 3-1 win over St. Lawrence on December 8, 2012.
• Clarkson is in the midst of a seven-game road stretch. After Saturday's game, the Knights return to a full slate of ECAC Hockey contests to close out the regular season. League play resumes for Clarkson on Friday, January 13 with a road game at Yale.
• The Knights posts a 5-2-1 mark on opponents' home ice, but have lost their last two away games. Clarkson plays eight of its final 13 league games on the road, including its three longest conference road trips of the season. 
• Clarkson finished with a 4-3-1 record against Hockey East foes this season.  
• The Knights, who last played in Potsdam on December 3, falling to Top-10 ranked Harvard 7-3, return to Cheel Arena for their next home game on January 27, hosting Union.
• Clarkson is 7-3-2 when its scores first. The Knights had scored the opening goal in eight straight contests before that streak was stopped in the game at St. Lawrence on December 9. Northeastern opened up Saturday's game with the first goal just 47 seconds in. 
• Freshman goaltender Jake Kielly has started 17 of Clarkson's first 20 games and posts a .913 save percentage and a 2.76 goals against average along with two shutouts. He has gone 5-3-2 in his last 10 starts after missing weekend action on November 4-5 with an illness. He picked up his first career point with an assist in the game at St. Lawrence. Kielly was named Most Outstanding Player of the Shillelagh Tournament. (11/26). Kielly was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month for November.
• Senior Jordan Boucher paces the Clarkson offense with 17 points on seven goals and 10 assists. Boucher leads all current Knights in career scoring with 59 points (24-35) through 97 games. 
• Freshman Devin Brosseau is second on the Green and Gold offensively with 15 points on five goals and 10 assists. He posts a team-high plus/minus at +7. Brosseau was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month for October.
• Junior Sam Vigneault is third on the Knights in points with 14 (4-10).
• Senior Troy Josephs is one of two Knights with 13 points. He has tallied a team-high eight goals to go along with a +5 rating. Josephs has come on strong recently with seven goals and three assists over his past 10 games. Josephs sat out the Northeastern game with an injury. 
• Rookie Sheldon Rempal (5-8) also has 13 points.
•  Freshman Nico Sturm follows right behind with 12 points (3-9).  
• Clarkson's Class of 2020 is the top producing freshman class in ECAC Hockey and is seventh overall in the NCAA, averaging 2.84 points per game.  The Knights' seven rookie skaters, and Kielly (one assist) have accounted for 35% of Clarkson's offense with 54 points on 18 goals and 36 assists. 
• The Freshman Line centered by Sturm (3-7), left wing Brosseau (5-6) and right wing Rempal (5-7) has accounted for 13 goals and 20 assists over the past 16 games since skating together starting with the game at Providence (10/21).
• James de Haas leads the Knights in scoring from the blueline with 10 points on fourgoals and six assists. 
• After missing the first nine games of the season nursing an injury defenseman Terrance Amorosa has made a big impact on the Knights' blueline as the Green and Gold have gone 6-2-2 with the junior back in the lineup. He has tallied a power-play goal and three assists through 10 games.  
• Clarkson is fifth in the country in penalty minutes, averaging 16.8 minutes per game. The Knights' penalty kill is rated 28th in the nation at 83.7% (108-129). 
• The Knights' power-play is 35th in Division I at 16.5% (16-97). Clarkson is 6-4-2 when it scores on the power play and 3-4-1 when it does not.
•    The Knights have been outscored 18-6 over the past three games, although two of those goals were empty-net tallies by Harvard late in the third period of the December 3 game, a 7-3 Crimson win.
•    Clarkson is tied for 24th in the PairWise Rankings.
• In its 95th season, Clarkson boasts 71 winning campaigns and a 1,404-843-152 all-time record for a .618 winning % since 1920-21.

•    Four current Golden Knights have been selected in the NHL Draft – de Haas (2012 Detroit - 6th rd, 170),  Terrance Amorosa (2013 Philadelphia - 5th rd, 189), Troy Josephs (2013 Pittsburgh - 7th rd, 209) and Kelly Summers (2014 Ottawa - 7th rd, 189).

Scouting Rensselaer
Rensselaer enters its final non-league game of the season looking to break out of a six-game losing streak after falling to sixth-ranked UMass-Lowell 5-1 in Troy on Tuesday night.   Guided by 11th-year head coach Seth Appert, the Engineers own a 3-18-1 overall record and enter the New Year in 12th place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 1-10-0 conference slate. RPI has struggled both offensively and defensively, averaging just 2.09 goals a game (55th in the NCAA) while allowing 4.05 goals per game.
The Enginners' last win was a 2-0 victory at Arizona State on November 26. The Engineers lone points in league play came in a 3-1 win over Brown at Houston Field House on November 4.

The Series:

The Knights scored three, third-period goals to knock off RPI 5-2 in Troy on November 11. Clarkson will close out its ECAC Hockey series against the Engineers on January 28 at Cheel Arena.  Five different Knights scored in the win and Juho Jokiharju recorded three assists. 

The Knights have taken three of four league points from RPI in each of the past two regular seasons. The Engineers, however, defeated the Green and Gold two games to one (3-2, 0-5, 3-1) in the 2015 ECAC Hockey first round series played at Cheel. Overall in the last 10 meetings, Clarkson holds a 5-2-3 edge.

A. J. Fossen has recorded a team-high seven points in the series against RPI with two goals and five assists. Terrance Amorosa has scored a team-high three goals to go along with two assists. Troy Josephs and Kelly Summers have also tallied five points against the Engineers with two goals and three assists apiece. 

Jake Kielly holds a .917 save percentage and a 2.00 goals against average in one game of the series. He made 22 saves on 24 shots in the November win on the road over the Engineers. Steve Perry has played in five games in goal against RPI and holds a .910 save percentage, a 1.80 goals against average and 2-1-1 record, including two shutouts in the series.
